Houston Enjoys Big Win in Season Opener - University of Houston Athletics

HOUSTON – Behind a balanced scoring attack, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program rolled to an 84-56 win over Alabama State in its season opener inside the Fertitta Center on Tuesday night.

Freshman guard Marcus Sasser led five Cougars in double-digit points with 14, thanks to 4-of-7 shooting from behind the arc. The Red Oak, Texas, native also grabbed two rebounds with an assist in the win.

Making his regular-season debut as a Cougar, sophomore guard Quentin Grimes finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists, while junior guard DeJon Jarreau and junior forward Justin Gorham each totaled 11 points. Junior forward Fabian White Jr. added 10 points with six rebounds.

The Cougars, who won their season opener for the 11th straight season, jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first seven minutes. Houston outrebounded, 45-24, in the first meeting between the two schools and limited the Hornets to 34.7 percent shooting.

Alabama State trimmed the Cougar lead to 31-22 following Kevion Stewart's 3-pointer with 3:19 left in the opening half. However, Houston scored the game's next 10 points and took a 41-25 lead into the locker room at the break.

Tobi Ewuosho led Alabama State with 23 points, thanks to 6-of-11 shooting from the field and 10-of-13 from the free throw line.

UP NEXT
• Following Tuesday's game, the Cougars continue their homestand when they face BYU at 8 p.m., Friday, inside the Fertitta Center. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free 2019-20 schedule magnet.
• From there, the team hits the road for the first time but will not have to leave the city limits when it takes on Rice at 7 p.m., Tuesday, inside Tudor Fieldhouse. That game will be produced by CBS Sports Network and air on Facebook and can be heard on KPRC 950 AM and on TuneIn.

Regular-season single-game tickets for the University of Houston Men's Basketball program's 2019-20 season are on sale now, and fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets soon before all are gone.

The Cougars have already sold out of 2019-20 season tickets, a first since 1998-99.

Fans still have opportunities to see the Cougars in action inside the Fertitta Center. Fans can purchase single-game tickets at the Houston Athletics Ticket Office during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, and any time at uhcougars.com/tickets.

Fans who were unable to purchase season tickets can get a head start for the 2020-21 season by placing their names on the Priority Waiting List for only a $50 deposit. To reserve places on the Priority Waiting List, fans can register by clicking here and following the appropriate links from the right column, beginning at 10 a.m., Oct. 14.
