The special issue of JSJ brings together four contributions that were originally presented at the... more The special issue of JSJ brings together four contributions that were originally presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in 2020 in a panel dedicated to the question "What is Hellenistic Judaism?" The panel was organized by the steering committee of the SBL Hellenistic Judaism section. In the introduction, the editors compare early approaches to Hellenism (Droysen) with contemporary ones (Chaniotis, the contributions in this issue), and discuss the question when Jewish Hellenism ends.

In 1947 Harry Austryn Wolfson published his massive and revisionary Philo: Foundations of Religio... more In 1947 Harry Austryn Wolfson published his massive and revisionary Philo: Foundations of Religious Philosophy in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. With the book, Wolfson aimed at proving that Philo was an innovative and highly influential philosopher—by no means an isolated Jew of no consequence to the history of philosophy. As becomes clear from numerous letters written to Wolfson on the occasion of the publication of the book and stored at the Harvard University Archives, for Jewish readers Wolfson’s proposed rehabilitation of Philo could provide a point of orientation. It served as a source of comfort and of pride in the post-war years. While the main thesis of Wolfson’s book, Philo as the precursor of medieval philosophy, was rejected by most scholars of Philo and ancient philosophy, the letters and notes discussed in this article show that much more was at stake than a purely academic discussion.

Das Judentum ist im Selbsterleben zuerst einmal eine Familiengeschichte, keine Glaubensgeschichte. Und so beginnt auch das erste Samuelbuch, hier zitiert nach der jiddischen Übersetzung von Yehoash1, mit einer Familiengeschichte. Elkone und Khane werden die Eltern von Shmuel werden. Letzterer wird bald im Zentrum des Geschehens sein, aber am Anfang steht der Blick zurück auf die fünf früheren Generationen väterlicherseits (von den Vorfahren von Khane und Pnine erfahren wir nichts). Mit dem weiten Blick zurück kontrastiert die unsichere Zukunft: Pnine, die erste Frau Elkones, hat Kinder, Khane aber "hot keyn kinder nit gehat". Das Samuelbuch beginnt spannungsvoll mit einem Problem, das aus der Tora bestens bekannt ist: langanhaltende Kinderlosigkeit.2 In der jüdischen Liturgie steht der Beginn der Samuelbücher an einer bemerkenswert markanten Stelle. Am ersten Tag von Rosch ha-Schana, dem jüdischen Neujahrsfest, wird im Anschluss an die Tora-Lesung als Haftara 1Sam 1,1-2,10 gelesen: die Geschichte also von Hanna, deren Gebet und Gelübde in Schilo erhört wird, die Samuel zur Welt bringt und ihn nach seiner Entwöhnung zu Eli, dem Priester von Schilo, zurückbringt und dann erneut zu Gott betet-zu Gott, "der tötet und lebendig macht" (2,6: ‫ומחיה‬ ‫.)ממית‬ Samuel steht damit ganz am Anfang: Sowohl in aschkenasischen als auch sephardischen Synagogen wird zu Beginn des neuen Jahres der Anfang des Samuelbuchs

Peut-être est-il permis de commencer avec une note personnelle avant de discuter la première cont... more Peut-être est-il permis de commencer avec une note personnelle avant de discuter la première contribution du colloque de Lyon, à savoir celle de Marcel Simon sur la « Situation du judaïsme alexandrin dans la diaspora ». Il n'est certainement pas évident que dans une rencontre historiographique sur un livre publié il y a 50 ans, soit présente une chercheuse qui avait déjà participé au colloque qui fait le sujet de ce livre. Cela est pourtant le cas avec Monique Alexandre, à l'époque jeune maître-assistante à la Sorbonne. La conférence de Monique Alexandre au colloque de Lyon sur « La culture profane chez Philon »-sujet qui depuis a attiré l'intérêt de plusieurs philoniens-est riche et continue d'être importante jusqu'à nos jours1. Il y a vingt-cinq ans j'ai eu la chance d'écrire mon mémoire de maîtrise en Lettres classiques à la Sorbonne sous la direction de Monique Alexandre. Le mémoire, très modeste et évidemment le travail d'un néophyte, portait sur « Le problème de la conversion et d'un 'prosélytisme juif' dans la deuxième partie des Antiquités Juives de Flavius Josèphe »2. Au début des années 90 une des questions les plus discutées dans le domaine du judaïsme ancien était en effet celle d'une mission juive ou d'un prosélytisme juif. En 1992, deux historiens, Édouard Will et Claude Orrieux, avaient publié un livre qui avait fait sensation et qui m'avait beaucoup impressionné à l'époque : « Prosélytisme juif » ? Histoire d'une erreur3. Will et Orrieux ont présenté une thèse qui était radicale et novatrice : selon leur avis, l'opinion répandue que l'antiquité gréco-romaine aurait connu une mission juive provenait, comme ils le disent dans leur livre, d'un « singulier contresens historique »4. Will et Orrieux niaient toute trace d'une mission juive. Ils le faisaient avec un grand enthousiasme académique, mais ils avançaient leur thèse avec un peu trop de force, dirais-je aujourd'hui. Les choses sont plus compliquées que ce que les deux auteurs présentent. Cette datation est en fait assez proche de celle du deuxième groupe, car, selon les rabbins, la s... more Cette datation est en fait assez proche de celle du deuxième groupe, car, selon les rabbins, la souveraineté perse n'a duré que trente-quatre ans. Une seule tradition est vraiment discordante, celle qui met en scène S. avec Caligula. Cette tradition a cependant un parallèle plus ancien dans Megillat ta'anit, où S. n'est pas mentionné. Ce dernier aurait été introduit dans un deuxième temps, sous l'influence du récit qui rapporte la rencontre de S. et d'Alexandre. Les sources rabbiniques sont donc cohérentes dans leur datation de S. Après ce bref résumé des résultats auxquels est arrivé l'A., il reste à dire quelques mots sur la méthode qui les a rendus possibles et sur l'enseignement plus général que l'on peut en tirer. La méthode suivie par l'A. est la même que celle qu'il avait déjà mise en oeuvre dans un ouvrage antérieur intitulé Ka-homer be-yad ha-yoser. Ma'ase hakhamim be-sifrut Hazal et recensé ici par nous 3. Elle relève essentiellement de l'histoire littéraire, c'est-à-dire de la recherche systématique des strates d'un récit et des sources dont a disposé son narrateur. Cette recherche permet de montrer comment le narrateur a retravaillé les matériaux qu'il avait à sa disposition, de manière à les rendre aptes à remplir la fonction et l'objectif qu'il leur assigne. Concernant S., les rabbins ont hérité de matériaux d'origine diverse (Flavius Josèphe, Ben Sira, traditions rabbiniques antérieures) et ils les ont modifiés au gré de leurs préoccupations, dans le cadre d'une matrice plus générale qui est la culture hellénistique et romaine. Il est donc vain de chercher chez eux le S. historique, on y trouvera uniquement une figure recomposée par l'imaginaire rabbinique d'une époque bien déterminée. José COSTA

JNDF ist eine Nachfolgezeitschrift der Judaica. Beiträge zum Verstehen des Judentums (hg. v. ZIID Zürcher Institut für interreligiösen Dialog), die in 74 Jahrgängen als Printversion erschien. Die neue Judaica veröffentlicht Artikel und Rezensionen in deutscher, französischer und englischer Sprache. Wie ihre Vorgängerzeitschrift hat sie einen starken Bezug zur Judaistik der Schweizer Universitäten, steht aber selbstredend allen als wissenschaftliche Plattform offen. Redaktionssitz ist das Institut für Judaistik der Universität Bern. JNDF verwendet ein kontinuierliches Publikationsmodell. Beiträge werden laufend publiziert, sobald sie den Redaktionsprozess durchlaufen haben.

Manchmal scheint es, als hätten die Unterstützer der einen wie der anderen Seite verlernt, in Kategorien wie Kompromiss und Respekt zu denken. Dahinter steht oft Antisemitismus oder Islamophobie. Von René Bloch Dass sich an Konflikten die Geister scheiden, liegt in der Natur der Sache. Im Nahostkonflikt, unter dem man ganz automatisch jenen um Palästina versteht, trifft dies allerdings in ganz besonderem Masse zu. In Kommentaren, auf Symposien und in Parlamenten ist die Diskussion, soweit sie zustande kommt, geprägt von einseitiger Parteinahme. Die einen betonen das Recht der Palästinenser, die anderen jenes von Israel. Am Nahostkonflikt scheiden sich die Geister sehr oft in radikaler und deswegen unproduktiver Form. Zwar gibt es auch Zwischenstimmen, aber sie werden vom Chor der Lobbys überstimmt. Dabei legt doch schon der Umstand, dass es sich unterdessen um einen sehr lange andauernden Konflikt handelt, nahe, dass die Fehler auf beiden Seiten zu suchen sind. Dieser über Jahrzehnte sich hinziehende Streit und Krieg, von dem sich nicht eindeutig sagen lässt, wann er begann, lässt sich nicht durch einseitige Schuldzuweisungen klären. Und dennoch sind die Stellungnahmen vielerorts, auch in gebildeten Schichten, frei von Ambivalenzen und Nuancen.
