What is significant? The pipe organ is the only example of an instrument built by leading Melbourne cabinet maker Andreas Svensson, possibly for his home in Kent Street, Richmond.
How is it significant? The organ is significant for historic, aesthetic and technical reasons at a regional level.
Why is it significant? The Svensson pipe organ at St Peter's Church is significant for the following reasons:
. It is the only identifiable example of its builder's work
. It is a rare example of an organ built by a Melbourne cabinet maker (although Clarence Andrewartha was prominent in the 1930s and 1940s)
. The instrument has been expertly constructed from excellent materials, including oak for the casework
. It remains essentially intact
. All of the original pipework appears to remain
. The sound of the instrument is articulate, clear and highly attractive
