History
This section concerns content related to Wrath of the Lich King.
At the time of the war against the Lich King, a fissure into Azjol-Nerub opened near Icemist Village, and Scourge nerubians poured out. The Anub'ar razed the village,[1] and imprisoned High Chieftain Roanauk Icemist within the ruins.[2] The surviving members of the tribe fled to the Westwind Refugee Camp.[3] In this dark hour, the taunka were discovered Garrosh Hellscream and his orc forces upon their arrival in Northrend.[4] Hellscream sent Emissary Brighthoof to the Icemist refugees, who renewed their spirits by armoring them with [Horde Armaments][5] and formally inviting them into the Horde.[6]
Following this members of the tribe, like Greatmother Icemist, made their way to Agmar's Hammer, where the Horde prepared to strike back against the Anub'ar in order to take back the village and free the High Chieftain. While the Horde attacked the Anub'ar by ground and sky to thin their numbers,[7][8] Banthok Icemist set off to the village determined to rescue his father.[9] After acquiring the key, the pair freed the imprisoned High Chieftain, and quickly came under attack by Under-King Anub'et'kan. In a tremendous display of his shamanistic powers, the Roanauk resurrected the bulk of the defenders of the village, allowing them to fight once more against their oppressors. The Under-king was ultimately slain and the Icemist retreated to Agmar's Hammer.[10]
With his fellow taunka by his side, High Chieftain Roanauk swore the Blood Oath of the Horde, fully bringing the taunka into the Horde.[11]
Exploring Azeroth
This section concerns content related to the Warcraft novels, novellas, or short stories.
After the war against the Jailer, the brothers Bronzebeard reported that despite the victory against Anub'et'kan, the Icemist hadn't reclaimed their village, which was still abandoned; overtaken by the Scourge, and fouled with nerubian webs.[12]

In the RPG
This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.
The Icemist tauren are a group of tauren that only live in a single place in all Northrend. They are led by Tundra Coldhoof. At some point in the past, they settled in a small outpost in the Dragonblight, in the shore of Lake Wintergrasp, and called it Icemist Village. They don't venture the blight proper very often, preferring the cold of the lake to the bitter air of doom and death.[13]
The tauren in Icemist Village are friendly and helpful. There you can always find someone with whom to trade or share information over a drink. They keep a ready supply of food, drink, clothes and basic tools, and sell them to anyone in need. They might even give things away, if people are desperate enough, and some have seen the tauren drag in travelers they found collapsed on the lake or in the surrounding area.[14]
Notes
- In the non-canon RPG they were described as winter tauren rather than taunka, as the latter hadn't been introduced to lore until Wrath of the Lich King.
