NFL Draft 2000: Players

Notes: Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year in 1996, when he carried 92 times for 642 yards and three touchdowns, caught three passes for 12 yards and returned 43 punts for 573 yards and one touchdown and 14 kickoffs for 324 yards. Second-team all-conference running back and return specialist in '97, when he rushed 134-973-9, caught 8-97 and returned 17 punts for 208-1 and seven kickoffs for 156 yards. Got a heavier workload in '98, carrying 243-1,024-8, catching 6-92 and returning seven punts for 28-0 and eight kickoffs for 172 yards. Played in only six games in '99. Was slowed by a sprained back and sprained ankle early in the season and then was dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons. Finished the year carrying only 53-179-2, catching 5-59 and returning 11 punts for 134-0 and three kickoffs for 34 yards.

Positives: Was a skillful runner with exceptional quickness and agility as an underclassman. Showed good hands. Appeared to be a pretty elusive runner who made the first man miss and at times would string moves together. Had an explosive burst of speed. Returned kickoffs and punts.

Negatives: Lacks height and strength. Gets brought down by arm tackles too often. Is a poor and weak blocker. Got heavier and seemed less focused in '99. Did not show the same elusiveness and explosiveness as a senior. Obviously did some bad things to get himself kicked off the team.

Summary: Must do a lot of background work to find out what went wrong in '99, when career seemed to derail. Looked like a good third-down and all-purpose type of back as an underclassmen but never really showed much in '99.
