Warszawa - Wilanów District
Dear friends,
Wilanów is inseparably associated with the Palace, a gem of the Polish Baroque, originally a residence of King John III Sobieski, and next of several magnate families. The area around the residence has also seen many a historic event.
The present-day District of Wilanów has grown out of the small villages that used to surround the main village with the famous Palace.
Its spirit has been formed by the destinies of its inhabitants, by their lives, work, education and entertainments. Its heritage also comprises the history of the legendary narrow-gauge Wilanów railway, the tragic events of September 1939 and of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, and the years after World War II, when Wilanów was rebuilt and became a true part of Warsaw.
Important as history is, one also should not forget what Wilanów District has achieved in recent years. Starting from the year 1994, every resident of Wilanów has witnessed the steady and systematic development of this part of Warsaw. The new status of local government has given rise to many initiatives, whose proper implementation has yielded good results. The immense civilization backlog of the district has remained in the past. We are happy to observe that at present the residents are better off, and that their lives are safer and more comfortable than before.
The existing plans for further development of Wilanów are ambitious but feasible. The plans are designed to suite the needs of the members of the local community, who show immense involvement in public life.
