ALBERT SCHWEITZER AWARDS FOR HUMANITARIANISM

The Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism was established in 1986 by Albert Toepfer, an international grain merchant from Hamburg, Germany, to advance the cause of humanitarianism by recognizing exemplary contributions to humanity and the environment.  The Prize for Humanitarianism is given under the auspices of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in New York and is administered by Johns Hopkins University.

C. Everett Koop
Gwen Mellon
Robert S. Lawrence


In addition to the Prize for Humanitarianism, the Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal for Humanitarianism was established in 1989 and has been given to select individuals who have demonstrated exemplary service to humanity.
