the unfortunate earl of Bothwell
Anonymous portrait of the unfortunate James Hepburn, earl of Bothwell.
He was the third husband of the equally unfortunate Mary, queen of Scots.

I do enjoy receiving email from kind visitors who wish to  comment upon the site.  I have met (electronically, of course) many interesting Tudor enthusiasts from around the world.  It's nice to know there are so many of us out there.  It's also nice to know people like visiting my wacky never-finished-always-growing website.  Over the years, it's become the internet version of an out-of-control houseplant.

If you wish to comment or ask me a question, click here.

Several questions come up more often than others, so I'll answer them here -

Attribution:  If I know the location of a portrait, it is listed with the commentary.  If there is no information, it means I simply haven't completed my research on a particular work.  I may post something eventually - but this website is a hobby and I don't update at regular intervals, only when I have the time.

When was the site last updated?:  Updates to the site are listed at the What's New? page.

When do you add new portraits?:  Whenever I find a new portrait - and the time to add it.  I prefer to add several portraits at once.  Check back every few months to see the additions.

Where can I view the new portraits?:  All new additions are listed at the (you guessed it) What's New? page.

Where can I buy prints / posters of the portraits?:  The best place to visit is the National Portrait Gallery, London's website.  They have the largest collection of Tudor-related portraits and will ship prints, posters, postcards, etc anywhere in the world.  Yes, they've threatened to sue me numerous times but I'll still direct you to their shop.  I won't hold their torturous legal reasoning (or lack thereof) against them.

Who are you? Where do you work? What are your qualifications? etc:  Again, this website is my hobby.  It's not a professional website.  It's not sponsored by anyone or any organization.  I am proud that all of the information at the site is as accurate as current research allows, - and if you find any factual errors, please email me.  (No one has in nine years, but it may happen.)  However, I value my privacy, - and so there is no personal information listed at any of my websites.  If this is a problem for students, I do apologize.  My advice is to do further research on Tudor portraiture (which you should anyway - it's a fascinating subject and any project requires more than one source) and direct your teacher to the site.  They may email me directly.

And finally:  If you wish to use any of the portraits for a school project, or for personal use, please do so.  If you use them for an internet site, please email me so we can exchange links.

Enjoy your visit,
-Marilee
