FSU Black Alumni Association pays tribute to first black student
Florida State University's Black Alumni Association will name a room in the new Alumni Hall in honor of Maxwell Courtney, the university's first African-American undergraduate student.
"This is a tribute to his academic achievement, courage and determination," said Keith Carr, president of the Black Alumni Association. "He was willing to be the first African-American undergraduate, and thanks to him and others who followed, people of all races, cultures and ethnicities can proudly call FSU their alma mater."
Carr announced the establishment of the Maxwell Courtney Room at today's dedication ceremony of "Integration," a larger-than-life sculpture commissioned by FSU to pay tribute to its first African-American students. Courtney is one of three students depicted in the bronze statue created by renowned sculptor W. Stanley "Sandy" Proctor.
The room will be located in the 22,000-square-foot Alumni Hall, which is currently under construction at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Tennessee Street. The building is expected to be completed this summer with a grand opening slated for the fall.
Courtney, a Tallahassee native, was admitted to FSU as its first African-American undergraduate in 1962 when he was just 16 years old. He graduated cum laude in 1965 with a degree in mathematics and minors in French and English. Courtney later earned a master's degree from the University of Maryland and worked as a systems management consultant to the Smithsonian Institution before he drowned in a 1975 accident.
