Space Applications for Development - knowledge, collaboration, information, partnerships
Spaces technologies have had a growing number of applications since its origins, including exploration, scientific research, military and industrial uses. Following the decline of the cold war and growing concerns regarding our environment various governments, space agencies and research centers have focused on the application of space technologies for sustainable development. Many of these initiatives seek to assist developing countries in disaster management and environmental monitoring.
We invited Dr. J. Paul Stephens, Business Manager of the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC), to speak about an innovative international public-private partnership. DMC is an international collaborative effort led by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) and involves seven agencies from United Kingdom, Algeria, China, Nigeria, Turkey, Thailand and Vietnam. It is the first civilian Earth Observation (EO) constellation to provide a daily imaging revisit capability of its resolution and is specifically designed for disaster monitoring.
