MATCH REPORT
In the first post‑war Cup competition, extra time was to be played if teams were level after ninety minutes. For this one season only, ties were also to be played on a home and away basis, with aggregate scores deciding, from the first to the sixth round inclusive. This piece of legislation changed the whole character of the competition ‑there was to be no 'sudden death'.
Derby needed an extra half‑hour before they could clinch victory in the Final. They would not have needed the extension had their own poor shooting and some gallant defence by CharIton not kept them without a goal in the first half. With ten minutes to go the match burst into life with Turner's amazing double. First he diverted Duncan's shot into his own net, and then, sixty second later, he rammed a free‑kick through Derby's defensive wall for the equalizer.
There were no further goals in normal time, but one odd thing happened ‑ the ball burst. Stamps might have scored, had the ball retained its shape. Instead, it burst as he connected and Bartram caught the deflated object without great difficulty. Derby ran riot in extra time. Doherty scored almost immediately from Stamps' cross, and ten minutes later Doherty returned the compliment, setting up a scoring chance for Stamps. Then Stamps made it 4‑1 and, though Chariton still kept on, they couldn't even manage a consolation goal.
