Supporters behaviour on matchdays
03 Sep 2007. The club has recently answered a number of eircom league match delegate reports to the FAI Disciplinary Board. The broad contents of these is what we would like to share with the Rovers fanbase in this note.
In the first instance, it has been pointed out and noted that the matchday experience at Rovers' home games this season has improved dramatically with only minor issues occurring. We must all continue to work on this and to cut out idiotic behaviour such as throwing plastic bottles on to the playing surface - this is not tolerated by any club member, never mind the Board. Thus far, these incidents have cost the club nearly €2,000 and this is not money we can afford to pay over needlessly. This should be invested in our squad and club structures. As we have noted, the vast majority of our fanbase understands this and is working, as one, to eradicate any senseless anti-social behaviour at the club.
One other point that has recently caused come consternation amongst some supporters is the post match delay at leaving Dalymount Park when Rovers fans are requested by the Gardai to remain for 10 minutes after the final whistle. We have spoken with the Garda superintendent on this matter and we must accept that the exit onto the laneway behind the Jodi stand does not make for a speedy clearance of the stand with 2,000+ people in it. This small exit point does necessitate a ten minute wait and we ask for all supporters to bear this in mind for future visits to Dalymount. A similar 'stay back' was put in place at our home games v St Pats and Bohemians recently and the away supporters observed the ten minute period as they should.
In closing, and on behalf of the Board representing the members of this great club, can we say that as a collective we have lifted the club from unthinkable lows two years ago and on and off the pitch and put ourselves into a position of high regard with many, if not all, stakeholders in football and the organisation of matchdays i.e. FAI, Gardai, Referees and other clubs - we intend to keep this reputation and build on it.

"Dave is a forward with the Shamrock Rovers in the resurgent Irish Eircom Football League, having joined from the defunct Dublin City FC. A life-long Shamrock Rovers fan, David made some history for himself when he scored the goal in the promotion/relegation play offs that consigned the Hoops to the First Division! Away from the pitch Dave’s other great love are Fletcher and Alli, two Boxer dogs who allow Dave to think that he controls them, but in reality it is quite the opposite!" Young Hoops go down to Sao Paulo
05 Apr 2007. Tired legs caught up with Shamrock Rovers when they were beaten 6-1 by an impressive Sao Paulo in their third Dallas Cup game in four days. Rovers went 3-0 down in the opening 15 minutes, then further behind to 4-0 before half time before Stephen Nolan got his second goal of the tournament to make it 4-1. Rovers battled hard against a rampant Brazilian side but conceded twice more after the break. "Sao Paulo are a different class and their finishing is class", said Hoops manager Stephen Fennell. "The players got an insight into what the best in the world is. We nearly took Eintracht Frankfurt and Tigres but Sao Paulo are on a different level altogether. To put into perspective, they turned down a bid of £4.5 million for their captain. Their performance was world-class, I am proud of our players, it was our best performance even though we were at the wrong end of the result". Rovers will stay over for a couple of days during which they play a friendly against a Japanese team and possibly another game against an American team.
It's a disappointing end for the lads but no doubt the experience will have learned them a lot and they should be proud to be the first Irish club in this prestigious tournament. Click here for more details.
UPDATE: Sao Paulo went on to beat Real Madrid 4-0 in next round.

U18s lose to Tigres of Mexico in Dallas Cup
02 Apr 2007. Shamrock Rovers were unfortunately on the wrong end of a seven goal thriller against Mexican side Tigres at the Dallas Cup today. The Hoops fought back after being 3-0 then 4-1 down only to miss a penalty in the 90th minute. Ciaran Kilduff scored twice while Stephen Nolan got Rovers' other goal. Despite the hard game against Eintracht just 24 hours earlier, the Hoops fought gallantly but playing against the second full-time outfit in a short space of time took its toll on the Dublin side in the end. By all accounts, Rovers gave a tremendous performance and will be more than up to it when they meet Brazilian side Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

02 Apr 2007. ROVERS PAY PRICE FOR GALWAY WIN
Shamrock Rovers will be without skipper Aidan Price and Danny O'Connor for Tuesday's big Dublin derby against Bohemians at Dalymount Park. "Danny's injury is worse than we first thought and he will be out for a few weeks," says Hoops' boss Pat Scully. "And Aidan Price is going to be out for three weeks. "Aidan probably shouldn't have played against Galway, but with Barry Ferguson suspended and Danny O'Connor unavailable, he put the team first and suffered the consequences. "He was willing to take a gamble by playing last Friday and that just shows the kind of lad he is. We won the game, so the gamble was worth it in terms of the three points. "The other lads who returned from injury all came through the Galway game and are fine for Tuesday. Other than that, we have on-going injury problems with Andy Myler and Paul Shiels." Both Barry Ferguson and David Cassidy are available for selection once again after serving one-game suspensions.

Fair Play for Shamrock Rovers
28 Mar 2007. From the Irish Times letters page - 28.03.07: FAIR PLAY FOR SHAMROCK ROVERS
Madam, - We were quite dismayed by the tone of Tom Humphries's remarks on Shamrock Rovers and the stalled Tallaght stadium development (Locker Room, March 19th). While complimenting the voluntary community efforts of others, he described Rovers as "a professional soccer club, a commercial enterprise", completely ignoring the fact that it is a not-for-profit, community-based football club owned and run by its members.
While our first team is professional, the rest of the club is almost exclusively run by volunteers, and our schoolboy section caters for hundreds of youngsters across South Dublin. Shamrock Rovers has also established a range of scholarship schemes offering educational opportunities to students at primary, secondary and third level.

Shamrock Rovers and the Tallaght Community Stadium
27 Mar 2007. Shamrock Rovers is refuting recent unfounded and unjustifiable comments in the press relating to the club and the Tallaght Community Stadium. "There has been some blatantly untrue and derogatory remarks made about the club and in relation to the Tallaght stadium," says Shamrock Rovers' chairman, Jonathan Roche. "Either there are serious misconceptions out there about our club, or else this is part of a deliberate attempt to portray the club in a bad light at this particular time.
"Shamrock Rovers is a community-based, not-for profit club that is owned and run by its members. In that respect it's much like a GAA club, but we offer even more to the community. On top of the community projects, the club's professional section offers a career curve for young footballers, who can aspire to earning a living from football without having to leave home.
"Shamrock Rovers offers a broad and comprehensive range of opportunities in sport, education and employment to the youth of South Dublin and beyond. It is quite unique."
It was also implied that Shamrock Rovers was incapable of running its own business affairs properly - something the Hoops’ Financial Director, John Lyons is eager to disprove. "Since the fans took over the club in 2005, Shamrock Rovers has been run on sound business principles," he explains. "We pay our wages and taxes in full and on time, and even turned a profit last year. "As we're a not-for-profit members' club, that profit stayed within the club and has contributed to our on-going development as a community-based football club."
Shamrock Rovers also feels that there is no valid justification for making the playing surface of the Tallaght stadium big enough to facilitate senior gaelic games. 'Local GAA clubs in the Tallaght/South Dublin area are already well catered for and have excellent facilities of their own - and good luck to them," says General Manager Noel Byrne. "Both the South Dublin County Council and the government want the stadium completed as it was intended from the outset: as a football ground. We fully support them."
Club Marketing Director Mark Lynch insists that the recent Republic of Ireland internationals at Croke Park showed how impractical it would be to make a football stadium large enough to accommodate gaelic games. "The football pitch looked lost on such a massive surface," he says. "And while the GAA's willingness to temporarily open Croke Park is to be applauded, Tallaght is a completely separate issue. "The structural aspect of the stadium would be fundamentally compromised in order to facilitate senior gaelic games. That is obvious from one glance at the recent Ireland-Wales international in Croke Park. "Shamrock Rovers is pro-GAA, many of our members are also Dubs' fans and GAA club members, but we fail to see how either football or gaelic games would benefit from butchering this facility. “Given that the stadium’s primary purpose has always been to facilitate football, it makes no sense to complete it in a way that would seriously detract from that aim.”

FAI support Rovers for Tallaght
14 Dec 2006. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has today fully supported Shamrock Rovers’ position in the on-going saga over the stalled Tallaght Stadium project.
The Association has also pledged financial assistance for the Hoops’ High Court battle involving GAA club Thomas Davis, who are seeking a Judicial Review of the South Dublin County Councils decision last February to proceed with the completion of the Stadium in Tallaght as a football only facility. Today the High Court determined that the hearing of the case would take place on March 16th next, delaying the project by at least a further three months. This will mean that the Stadium construction will have been stalled by this legal case for at least 13 months.
“We want to see Shamrock Rovers playing in the Tallaght Community Stadium and as soon as possible. We have been working hard behind the scenes with the various stakeholders over the past two years to see Tallaght completed for soccer in the area,” says FAI Chief Executive, John Delaney.
“This week, the Board of the Association pledged significant funds to the club in order to aid them in the most practical manner as they continue to pursue the goal of completion of Tallaght. These funds will be offset against the legal fees Rovers face as the High Court case continues. Obviously, we wish the club every success in this matter.”
Shamrock Rovers’ Chairman, Jonathan Roche, welcomed the FAI’s commitment to the Tallaght Stadium project and its funding of the club’s legal fees.
“To have such full and public support of the FAI behind us means that Irish football is united on this issue,” says Roche. “And that support is most welcome. It’s quite clear that there is a concerted effort to prolong the process as much as possible in order to prevent our senior team joining the rest of the club in Tallaght. But it won’t succeed.”
