Lindau, on the Bavarian shores of Lake Constance, is split into two parts. The picturesque old town on an island has preserved its attractive streets, mostly now pedestrian areas with distinctively decorated Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque houses. The main street, Maximilianstrasse, is particularly appealing with pretty patrician houses, arcades, street cafes and fountains. At the southern end of the island, the narrow entrance to the harbour is guarded by two columns: one a lighthouse, the other bearing the Lion of Bavaria.
The other part of the town is the garden city of Lindau, spreading up the slopes on the mainland, with residential, recreational and industrial areas. The two parts of the town are linked by a road bridge and railway causeway. |
