IDAHO | International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia | May 17th
Gay Rights banners fly in dozens of Manchester police stations for IDAHO
Pride: The rainbow flag was raised in support of International Day Against Homophobia
Dozens of police stations raised a gay rights banner to mark a day of action against homophobia. The organisations raising the rainbow flag high were taking part in The Lesbian and Gay Foundation’s “Flying the Flag” campaign.
The campaign - funded by the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities - encourages Manchester City Council Sackville Gardens local authorities and other public sector organisations from across Greater Manchester to fly the rainbow flag from their buildings on IDAHO to raise awareness of homophobia, and to highlight to LGBT people that their contributions are recognised and valued.
First IDAHO event in San Francisco - 5000 $ raised for Iraq
In San Francisco, activists came together over the course of a one-hour rally and participated in San Francisco’s first action for IDAHO, Sunday afternoon at Harvey Milk Plaza. The rally was put under the sign of protest against the killings and torture of LGBT Iraqis, and expressed unwavering solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the U.S.-occupied country.
Thanks to the efforts of participating organisations Gays Without Borders, the Rainbow World Fund, and several members of the ever-fabulous Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, over the past week and today’s bucket brigade, slightly more than $5,000 was raised. The funds will go to direct-relief aid for the LGBT Iraqi community

Each year, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (the “IDAHO”, as it is usually called), will see actions and initiatives take place in many countries and contexts and on many different issues.
All these activities and initiatives are a very strong signal to all, decisions makers, public opinion, civil rights movements, human rights defenders, etc. throughout the world that our fights for our Rights as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, intersex, etc… is vibrant!
The Day provides all different kind of actors with a very powerful opportunity to express their demands and to advocate for their case. Each year also, the IDAHO aims at using the extra public, political and media attention that it provides at all levels to highlight one specific aspect of the struggle for sexual rights.
This year, we chose to highlight the often neglected but important issue of Transphobia.
