Watershed Management Department

The Province of Bukidnon hosts the headwaters of a number major river systems in Mindanao. Pulangi river watershed is extensively the water source of Bukidnon Province.

The Pulangi IV Hydroelectric Plant watershed is the second largest watershed in the country with an area of about 1.8 Million hectares. It is also known as the Upper Pulangi watershed which comprises ten (10) catchments that covers six (6) municipalities and two (2) cities in Bukidnon namely: Impasugong, Cabanglasan, San Fernando, Lantapan, Maramag, Quezon, Valencia City and Malaybalay City. The watershed is the major source of water of the existing National Power Corporation-Pulangi IV Hydroelectric plant with a capacity of 255 megawatts located at Maramag that contribute 25% of Mindanao Power need and the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) dam which serves 8,000 hectares of rice paddies.  It is a reservoir type power plant with a surface area of about 1,985 hectares with a live storage of 67 Million  cubic meters. The catchment's forestland area is about 289,127 hectares and 60% or approximately 192,368 hectares of which is devoid of trees, thus, high degree of soil in some parts of the sub-watershed is evident, estimated volume of silt in the reservoir is 26 million cubic meters.

The Pulangi watershed reservation is located within the municipalities of Maramag, part of Quezon, San Fernando, Lantapan, Cabanglasan, part of Impasugong, and the cities of Valencia and Malaybalay all in the province of Bukidnon covering an area of 309,750 hectares.  Like in Lake Lanao-Agus River watershed reservation, NPC is responsible in the management and development of 40,772 hectares within the immediate vicinities of Pulangui 4 Hydroelectric Power Plant as the whole reservation is under the administrative jurisdiction of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (WMD_ERC documents).

Major land use patterns of the reservation include forest land, brushland and open /cultivated area.
