It has recently been made known that A Behanding In Spokane will premiere on Broadway on 4 March 2010! This will be Martin's first play to originate on Broadway. There has been wide coverage of this online, including casting rumours that mention names such as Chris Rock, Sam Rockwell and Zoe Kazan. These, however, are still just rumours. The play is noted to be an exception to its predecessors because of its setting outside of Ireland and in small town America. However, The Pillowman was the first play to not be set in Ireland.

Irish Tony-nominated director John Crowley is going to direct A Behanding In Spokane, set to premiere in New York. "We're casting it at the moment and we hope to start rehearsals at the end of September," he tells the Irish Times. "Martin is a phenomenal talent as a writer," he adds. Crowley previously directed the Broadway production of The Pillowman, which earned him a Tony nomination.

I'd lost above news item completely with the small crash, but could (amusingly) find it back copied on a Shane MacGowan Forum. Thanks!

Brendan Gleeson's acceptance speech for Martin's BAFTA award can be found here on this site. Martin asked him to thank everyone involved in making the movie, and also to thank and apologize to the people of Bruges, which isn't really a shithole.

Here's a clip of Martin at the Academy Awards 2009 red carpet, short but sweet interview from 22 February 2009. Also, images of the 2003 National Theatre production of The Pillowman have been added to the gallery, with many thanks to the wonderful David-Tennant.Com.

A "webstore" is being added to this website, where you can also find out where to buy books about Martin, as well as the books and films by him. The interviews are being relocated to be hosted on this site one by one, also, there's a new interview added.

We are pleased to announce that Ralph Fiennes Corner has been sent back into the interwebs. Welcome back to this wonderful affiliate!

Congratulations to Martin for winning "Best Screenplay" and "Best International Film" at the IFTA ceremony last night. Brendan Gleeson accepted the awards on Martin's behalf. Due to mysterious circumstances, there is little to no media to be found online of the ceremony.

Congratulations Martin on winning the BAFTA for Best Screenplay!

Martin wasn't there to accept the BAFTA award, so Brendan Gleeson accepted the award on his behalf. When asked on the red carpet where Martin was he said "Who knows where Martin is? You never know. You never know or ask where Martin is!" [source]

Many thanks to Erenik for sending this in! Here's Martin's official reaction to the Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay:

"My heartfelt thanks to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, particularly the writers' branch, for their support. I'm thrilled that a tale so peculiar and twisted, and that was released so long ago, has stayed in their minds for so long."

Great news!

The New York Times reports a new play is coming up.

[...] He's written a new play, "A Behanding in Spokane," a copy of which the paper has obtained. Unlike his other plays, it's not set in Ireland; it takes place in "small town America." The four-member cast includes a "man in mid- to late -40s who is missing his left hand," and "a black man and a white chick." The man missing his left hand, needless to say, wants it back, and the couple, who try to scam him, end up getting tied to a radiator, a bomb threatening to go off if they move. There is lots of blood and gore and hilarity ensues. It's very Martin McDonagh.

"It's brand new," Mr. McDonagh said when asked about the play. "It's still under wraps but it should be for the next season." Where it would be performed he said was off the record.

Thrilled over his Oscar nomination, he laughed about the fact that he's been nominated four times for a Tony but has never won. "I have more luck with the Oscars than the Tonys," he said.
