Workers began construction Monday morning on the $1 billion Port of Miami Tunnel project.
The tunnel will connect downtown Miami to the Port of Miami. About 7,000 trucks a day are expected to use the system, instead of clogging the streets of downtown Miami.
Miami Beach city leaders did not want the initial construction to affect traffic during the busy Memorial Day weekend. The Florida Department of Transportation has promised that traffic will not be an issue for the short-term.
The bulk of the project, which will entail digging between Watson Island and the port, will not begin until next year.
The project is expected to cost a total of $1 billion.
