Driving Miss Daisy

Driving Miss Daisy is an American comedy-drama based on the Alfred Uhry play of the same title and was the winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actress (Jessica Tandy). This touching story describes the unlikely friendship between eccentric elderly Southern Jewish woman, Miss Daisy Wethan (Jessica Tandy) and her loyal, African American chauffeur, Hoke (Morgan Freeman). In 1948 a driving accident causes Miss Daisy to no longer be able to drive herself. Reluctant to accept help at first Miss Daisy eventually trusts Hoke to be her chauffeur and slowly they become close friends. When Miss Daisy discovers that Hoke is illiterate she teaches him to read. Miss Daisy also learns that Hoke as never left his home state of Georgia. Racism and prejudice that saturated American society during this time are explored in the film. Issues of race were realized by Miss Daisy as she begins to understand how others treat Hoke differently and she is exposed to the social aspects of discrimination.moreless
