In order to complete the monumental task of constructing the 2,770km Overland Telegraph line within the 18 month time limit, the project was subdivided into 4 sections:


The Southern Section of the line was put out to a private contractor, Edward Meade Bagot, and covered 816km of mostly pastoral country from Port Augusta to the Macumba River near Oodnadatta.
