BAS Gold Medal Award Ceremony 2011

The Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) Gold Medal Award Ceremony (2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010) was held on Sunday, 31 July 2011 in the Osmani Memorial Auditorium. The Chief Guest of the Ceremony, the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, His Excellency Mr. Md. Zillur Rahman could not attend the Ceremony due to health reasons.

The Hon’ble State Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, Architect Yeafesh Osman distributed the Gold Medals to the Awardees. Among 23 awardees, 7 were from Dhaka University, 4 from Rajshahi University, 3 from Bangladesh Agricultural University, 3 from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology, one from Chittagong University, one from Khulna University, one from Jahangirnagar University, one from Central Hospital, one from Atomic Energy Commission and one from Mother and Child Care Hospital.

The President of the BAS, Prof. Dr. M Shamsher Ali welcomed the invitees and delivered a speech regarding the past and present activities and projected the future plan of the Academy. The Secretary of the Academy Prof. Dr. Naiyyum Choudhury cited the bio-profiles of the awardees and mentioned their notable achievement of them. The Special Guest, Architect Yeafesh Osman, Hon’ble State Minister declared to the delight of the scientists and invitees present that a National Science & Technology Bhavan is going to be established soon in the already allotted land in Agargaon, Sher-e-banglanagar, Dhaka. Over 300 invitees including BAS Fellows, Vice Chancellors, Heads of R&D organizations, Academics, Scientists, Researchers and relatives of the awardees were present on the occasion.

List of the Academy Gold Medal Awardees with Profile

Professor Dr. M. M. Shahidul Hassan

Born in 1951, Dr. M.M. Shahidul Hassan is a Professor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. He got B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the then East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology in 1968. He received his Ph.D from Clarkson University, USA in the area of semiconductor devices. During his tenure at Clarkson University he published ten research papers in international journals.

Dr. Hassan supervised twenty five Masters and one Ph.D research students. At present three graduate students and one Ph.D student are doing research under his supervision. His research interest includes the analytical modeling of various non-ideal effects, transit time and storage time of semiconductor devices such as BJT, HBT, IGBT, LED and homo-junction and hetero-junction solar cells.

Professor Shahidul Hassan served several universities and research institutes abroad. He served Multimedia University (MMU), Malaysia as a Professor from 1997 to 1999. Dr. Hassan worked at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 1999 to 2001. He taught summer school at Clarkson University as Visiting Professor in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. He was a recipient of prestigious EU Post-doctoral fellowship. He was a part-time member of UGC, Bangladesh for a period of two years.

Dr. Shahidul Hassan was an associate member of Dr. Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy and attended many workshops on electronic materials and low dimensional devices.

Professor Hassan has published twenty five papers in international journals and many in national journals. He received UGC awards for best research paper for 2001, 2002 and 2005. He took a leadership role in establishing Intel Bangladesh Association (IBA).

In recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences is honoring Professor M M Shahidul Hassan with the award of BAS Gold Medal for Senior Scientists in Physical Sciences for the Year 2007.

Dr. Tanvir Noor Baig

Dr. Tanvir Noor Baig is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Physics, University of Dhaka. He was born in 1970. He graduated from the Department of Physics of the University of Dhaka in 1994, and pursued research in Biomedical Physics. He was offered a National Science and Technology Fellowship to pursue research in Biomedical Physics in 1997. He was awarded Monbusho scholarship and carried out research in Biomedical Engineering in University of Tokyo. There he was introduced to High Magnetic Field research and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. After spending about two years in the laboratory of Biomagnetics and Bioimaging under the supervision of Professor Shogoo Ueno he returned to Dhaka University in 1999 to pursue carrier as a Lecturer of Physics. In 2001, he was accepted as a MS leading to PhD student with teaching assistantship in Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA. He completed PhD in 2007 and joined as Assistant Professor in the University of Dhaka. Presently he is on leave to pursue postdoctoral research in the field of ionizing and non-ionizing medical imaging physics at Case Western Reserve University, His research is on Computational electromagnetic and its application to Industrial and medical physics.

Dr. Baig’s Ph.D research work focused on reducing the extreme acoustic noise problem in Magnetic Resonance Imaging system and it earned him a co-authorship on a patent addressing noise reduction method for MRI.

Dr. Baig’s postdoctoral research involves Hybrid MRI and magnetic particle imaging (MPI) that would allow targeting and killing tumors through remotely heating the particles inside the body and causing local hyperthermia. He published over thirty articles in leading journals, and participated in more than 10 international conferences. Dr. Baig was selected as a Global Young Scientist for 2008 by the Inter Academic Panel (IAP) on international issues and represented in World Economic Forum in Tianjin, China in 2008. He is a Founding Member of Global Young Academy (GYA).

Professor Dr. Muniruddin Ahmed

Professor Dr. Muniruddin Ahmed was born in 1952. He passed Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons.) and Master of Pharmacy from the University of Dhaka in 1972 and 1973, respectively. He stood First class First in both the examinations. He obtained his Ph.D from Free University Berlin, Germany in 1982.

Dr. Ahmed joined the Department of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka in 1976 as a Lecturer and became a Professor in 1992. He has more than 35 years of experience as Professor, Researcher, Writer and Columnist.

Professor Ahmed received several scholarships and awards both from national and international institutions. He was awarded DAAD Scholarship for Ph.D program. He got JSPS, Senior DAAD and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowships to pursue Post-doctoral research in Japan and Germany. He received Abdur Rab Chowdhury Memorial Gold Medal in 1987, H.H. Rahman Gold Medal in 2001 and UGC Award in 1991.

Dr. Ahmed has published more than 93 scientific research articles mostly in prominent international journals. He is a popular columnist and writes on regular basis on different issues, particularly on health, medicines and current national and international issues in different national daily newspapers. He has published four books. He attended many international seminars, conferences and workshops as a resource person.

Professor Dr. Muniruddin Ahmed’s fields of research include isolation, purification, characterization and pharmacological screening of natural products from medicinal plants; and glucocorticoid receptor interaction with glucocorticoids and differential agonists: new aspects of mechanism of action. He has determined structures of about 150 new compounds from different medicinal plants of Bangladesh. Some of the new compounds have shown potent analgesic, antiinflammatory and diuretic activities.

In recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of Pharmaceutical sciences, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences is honoring Professor Dr. Muniruddin Ahmed with the award of BAS Gold Medal for Senior Scientists in Biological Sciences for the Year 2007.

Dr. Md. Khaled Hossain

Born in 1969, Dr. Md. Khaled Hossain, an Associate Professor in Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Rajshahi. He got his B.Sc Honours and M.Sc degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Rajshahi University in 1996 and 1997, respectively securing First class first position in both the examinations.

Mr. Hossain started his teaching career from April, 1998 as a Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Rajshahi. He was awarded Monbusho Scholarship in 1998 and obtained Ph.D degree from Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan in 2003.

Dr. Hossain received fellowships from Tokyo Biochemical Research Foundation (TBRF) and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) for the post-doctoral research. Coming back to Bangladesh in 2007, he concentrated to develop his own research. Recently he has been awarded a Commonwealth Staff Fellowship.

Dr. Hossain is leading a research team that includes Ph.D, M.Phil and Master level thesis students. His team is exploring the role of Arsenic exposure disease progression in human, and bioremediation of Arsenic toxicity. He has received several national and international grants for conducting his research. He has made collaborations with several scientists in Japan, Sweden and UK for maintaining the international standard of his research.

Dr. Hossain has attended several seminars and scientific congresses at home and abroad. He has thirty three publications in several journals.

Dr. Hossain is frequently organizing scientific seminars and symposia in his department where renowned scientists from home and abroad present their research findings. The ultimate goal of his research is to protect the people of Bangladesh from the toxic effects of Arsenic and different pollutants.

Professor Dr. M. Feroze Ahmed

Professor Dr. M. Feroze Ahmed was born in 1945. He graduated in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1968 and was appointed as a Lecturer therein. He completed his Master of Science with specialization in Environmental Engineering and then Ph. D. from University of Strathclyde, UK. Dr. Feroze Ahmed became a Professor of BUET in 1986. He is a member of several national and international professional bodies and committees: Director, Planning and Development, BUET; Manager, University of Alberta-BUET Linkage Project; Founder Director, International Training Network Center at BUET. He also worked as a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, U.K.

Professor Ahmed’s research on drinking water quality particularly in the field of Arsenic contamination has received national and international recognition. He is a Member of the International Expert Committee on Drinking Water Quality. Professor Ahmed’s work and views as an internationally reputed expert on Arsenic have been published in the Periodic Table under element Arsenic by American Chemical Society.

Professor Ahmed has published 130 technical papers including three papers in the reputed journal, Science. He has authored and edited 16 books on current environmental issues of national and international importance and most of them are available on-line. His book on Water Supply and Sanitation, written in both English and Bangla, is a popular textbook in Bangladesh as well as in some universities in U.K., Canada, Denmark, and African Countries.

He is one of the pioneers in high-rise construction in Bangladesh. His services as top environmental expert in many projects of national importance include Bangabandhu Bridge and presently the design of Padma Multipurpose Bridge.

Professor Ahmed’s contribution to engineering profession and education is well-recognized. He received Institution of Engineers Bangladesh Gold Medal, 2004 in recognition of meritorious performance and services to the nation and to engineering profession. He also received BUET- Dr. Rashid Memorial Gold Medal, 1998 in recognition of excellence in teaching, research, and active participation in national and international forum.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions in his field of research and in general to the progress of science and technology, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences is honoring Professor Dr. M. Feroze Ahmed with the BAS - Dr. M. O. Ghani Memorial Gold Medal for the year 2007.

Professor Dr. Shariff Enamul Kabir

Professor Dr. Shariff Enamul Kabir was born in 1955. He obtained his BSc (Hons.) standing First Class Second and MSc standing First Class First in Chemistry from Jahangirnagar University in 1975 and 1976, respectively. As a Commonwealth Scholar, he earned his Ph.D in Cluster chemistry from the University College London in 1986.

Dr. Kabir joined the Department of Chemistry, Jahangirnagar University as Lecturer in 1979, and become a Professor in 1992. He has more than 275 research articles published in different nationally and internationally recognized journals.

Professor Kabir has received a number of awards, prizes and fellowships including the Royal Society of Chemistry Research Fund Award in 1993, 1994 and 1995, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal (Senior Group) in 1998, Alexander Von Humboldt Fellowship and Post-Doctoral Fellowship, University of Montana, USA in 1994.

Dr. Kabir, was a Visiting Professor at California State University, USA (1989-1991), Montana University (2003-2005), Lund University, Sweden (2005-2006). He was a Fellow at Freiburg University, Germany, from 1994 to 1996.

Professor Kabir is a Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, Royal Society of Chemistry, and actively involved in several collaborative research projects with University College London, Götingen University, Germany; Lund University, Sweden; Montana University, Tennessee State University, Wisconsin University, Emory University, University of North Texas, USA; and IIT Bombay and IIT Indore, India.

Professor Dr. Shariff Enamul Kabir is Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University since 2009. He has so far supervised 15 Ph.D, three M. Phil and 200 Master degree researchers.

National Professor Dr. M. R. Khan

Professor Mohammad Rafi Khan (M R Khan), born in 1928, is an internationally reputed Paediatrician. He graduated (MBBS) from Calcutta Medical College in 1952. He got DTM&H (Edinburgh, 1957), DCH (London, 1957), MRCP (Edinburgh, 1962), FCPS (Bangladesh, 1974) and FRCP (Edinburgh, 1978).

Dr. Khan joined Dhaka Medical College as an Associate Professor in 1963 and became a Professor in 1970. He was Professor & Joint Director, IPGM&R (1973-78), Professor of Paediatrics and Director, Dhaka Shishu Hospital (1978-79), Professor of Pediatrics, IPGM&R, (1979-88). He is the Founder President of Bangladesh Pediatric Association. Since 1989 he is a Senior Visiting Professor at ICDDR,B; Professor and Founder Director and Chairman of the Institute of Child Health and Shishu Hospital, Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was the first introducer of vaccines against Polio, Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus in Bangladesh in January, 1965 using ‘Qurtro Virilon’, a combined vaccine.

Professor Khan has established a number of social voluntary development organizations namely Sasthya Foundation, Bangladesh: (1983); Shishu Hospital, Mirpur, Dhaka (1995); Institute of Child Health, Mirpur, Dhaka: (2006) ; Institute of Nursing, Mirpur, Dhaka, (2008); Shishu Hospital, Jessore (2000); Vocational Training Centre (VTC), Sathkira (2000); Support Centre for under-privileged children in Satkhira (1995); Sathkhira Shishu Hospital (1988); Medical College for Women and Hospital, Uttara, Dhaka; Nebedita Nursing Home, Dhaka and Central Hospital Ltd. Dhaka; Dr. M R Khan and Anwara Trust etc.

Dr. Khan has been awarded with gold medals by 13 organizations. He got Ekushey Padak in 2009. Dr. Khan has recently been awarded PhD by BSMMU for life-long contribution, research and services to humanity.

Dr. Khan has 38 publications in scientific journals at home and abroad. He is author and co-author of nine academic and popular books on child health.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of Medical Science, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences is honoring Professor Mohammad Rafi Khan with the award of BAS -Professor Emeritus Dr. Sultan Ahmed Choudhury National Science and Technology Gold Medal 2007.

Professor Dr. Khondkar Siddique-e- Rabbani

Born in 1950, Dr. Rabbani is currently a Professor and the Chairperson of the Department of Biomedical Physics & Technology, University of Dhaka. As a teacher of Physics department, more than 80 M.Sc., several Ph.D and M. Phil theses were supervised by him. Dr. Rabbani got his B.Sc. Honours in Physics from Dhaka University (1970, 1^st class 1st), M.Sc. in Physics from Islamabad University, Pakistan (1972, 1^st class 2^nd) and Ph.D. in Microelectronics from University of Southampton, UK, as a Commonwealth Scholar in 1978.

Professor Rabbani had three major innovations: A simple and low cost method to destroy diarrhoeal germs in water using solar radiation; Surface water free of Arsenic that can be made drinkable; a localised electrical impedance technique named ‘Focused Impedance Method (FIM), having the potential to study, diagnose or characterize medical conditions including lung, stomach and vascular functions and some cancers; a nerve conduction measurement technique ‘Distribution of F-latency, (DFL), that can give inner profile of conduction velocity of motor nerve fibres in a nerve trunk, for which no clinically suitable method existed before.

Dr. Rabbani joined Dhaka University as an Assistant Professor of Physics in 1978, and became a Professor in 1988. In November 2008 he joined the new post graduate Department of Biomedical Physics & Technology as its first Chairperson. He was a visiting Professor at IIT Kanpur, India for one month in 1997, and at the Islamic University of Technology, Gazipur, for one year in 2007. In 2004 he was made a member of the National SME Taskforce. Dr. Rabbani has to his credit more than 50 publications, one undergraduate text book on Electronics (Dhaka University Publication), more than 35 conference papers, and many popular articles.

Dr. Rabbani’s award list includes, Certificate of recognition as a finalist in National e-award 2010, Bangladesh for e-health; Ibrahim Memorial Gold Medal Award, Dhaka University, 2007-8; UGC Award 2007; National Fellowship of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, 1995; Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) - BAS Gold Medal Award for Physical Sciences, Junior group, 1990.

Dr. M. Sohel Rahman

Born in 1977, Dr. M. Sohel Rahman is an Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He completed both B.Sc. Engineering and M.Sc. Engineering degrees with distinctions from CSE department of BUET. Dr. Rahman received Commonwealth Scholarship to study Computer Science at King’s College London in UK. He completed his Ph.D in 2008. He also worked as a Visiting Research Fellow, King’s College London, UK from June 2008 to June 2011 and is currently an International Member of the Center for Stringology & Applications (CSA) of Digital Ecosystem and Business Intelligence Institute (DEBII) at the Curtin University of Technology, Australia.

Dr. Rahman was appointed as a Lecturer of BUET in May 2002 and became an Associate Professor in 2010.

Dr. Rahman has worked in diverse areas in Computer Science, including string and sequence algorithms, bioinformatics, musicolgy, design and analysis of algorithms, theoretical computer science with applications, multimedia technology, natural computing etc. Among his highly cited results are the work on high dimensional Knapscak problems, algorithms on different variants of sequence alignment problems.

Since his final years of undergraduate studies, Dr. Rahman was involved in quality research work in different fields of Computer Science. He has presented his work in internationally reputed conferences and workshop series in different continents of the world.

Dr. Rahman has also edited special issues of a reputed journal and a book series. He has published more than twenty papers in international journals and more than forty conference papers. He co-edited two books and contributed a chapter in an edited book.

In recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of Computer Science and Engineering, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences is honoring Dr. M. Sohel Rahman with the award of BAS Gold Medal for Junior Scientists in Physical Sciences for the Year 2008.

Professor Dr. Md. Fazlul Awal Mollah

Professor Dr. Md. Fazlul Awal Mollah was born in 1953. He secured First Class First position in both B.Sc. Fisheries (Hons.) and M.Sc. (Limnology). He started his career as a Teaching Fellow in Bangladesh Agricultural University in 1976 and was promoted to the position of a Professor in 1992. He did his Ph.D in 1983 on the reproductive physiology, breeding and larval rearing aspects of Thai magur, Clarias macrocephalus, under Commonwealth Scholarship program in Malaysia and then a year-long post-doctoral work in University of Stirling, UK under EC Fellowship Program.

Dr. Mollah is the first successful researcher to attain gonadal maturity of the indigenous riverine pangas, Pangasius pangasius, and rita, Rita rita, in the pond conditions and to breed the fish artificially for seed production. Some of the mentionable outputs of his long research career include development of induced breeding and larvae rearing technique for indigenous magur; mass culture technique for tubificid worms; cage culture method for indigenous pangas and its induced breeding technique; hybrid production technique between male African magur and female indigenous magur. Professor Mollah has supervised six Ph.D, and 55 M. Sc. thesis students.

Professor Mollah has more than 100 publications at home and abroad. He worked as Principal Investigator of about 20 research projects funded by World Bank, BAURES, ICLARM, DFID, UGC, BCSIR, SPGR, BAS-USDA and Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology. For his significant contribution in developing the fisheries sector through research, Professor Mollah received the 'Presidential Award' in 1992.

In recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of Fisheries, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences is honoring Professor Dr. Md. Fazlul Awal Mollah with the award of BAS Gold Medal for Senior Scientists in Biological Sciences for the Year 2008.

Professor Dr. Md. Siddiqur Rahman

Professor Dr. Md. Siddiqur Rahman, born in 1971, got his bachelor degree, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 2002 from Bangladesh Agricultural University, and received the Vice Chancellor award for outstanding results in DVM. He also obtained MS degree. He received the University Gold Medal from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Bangladesh; scholarship of World Assembly of Muslim Youth from Saudi Arabia; Rotary International Scholarship, Islami Bank Foundation Scholarship and Kazi Jebunnesa & Mahbub Ullah Trust Scholarship.

He received research fellowship from Chonbak National University, South Korea and studied for the Ph.D degree. He reported Brucella abortus from South Korean indigenous dog as a cause of brucellosis for the first time and described the public health aspects of brucellosis. He also carried out post-doctoral research work on Brucella.

Professor Rahman reported the prevalence of brucellosis and its association with reproductive problems in cows and goats in Bangladesh. He did his postdoctoral research at Osaka University Medical School, Japan.

He joined as a Lecturer in the department of Medicine, BAU in 1996 and then promoted as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in 1998, 2004, 2008, respectively.

Professor Rahman has supervised 20 MS students and written two books for the DVM and MS students. He has 70 scientific publications in national and international reputed journals.

Professor Dr. Md. Tofazzal Hossain Tarafder

Professor Dr. Md. Tofazzal Hossain Tarafder was born in 1950. He got his B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. degrees in Chemistry from Rajshahi University in 1971 and 1972, respectively, and he secured First Class First position in both the examinations. He obtained Ph.D from the University of Ottawa, Canada, on a Commonwealth Scholarship in the year 1983. He was the recipient of "Texaco Award" for the best Ph.D. thesis of the year 1983 from the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Tarafder did postdoctoral research during 1988-89 at the University of St. Andrews, UK on a Commonwealth Staff Fellowship. He visited University of Erlangan, Nurnberg, Germany, on German DAAD Visiting Fellowship for 1994-95. He also visited University of St. Andrews, Scotland, on a British Council Fellowship for three months in 1991. He joined the Department of Chemistry, Rajshahi University, as a Lecturer in 1974 and became a Professor in March 1990. He worked at the University of Putra Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, during 1995-2001.

Professor Tarafder's current research interests include synthesis of new nitrogen sulfur containing organic molecules and their reactions with various metal ions and study of their biomedical properties including x-ray single crystal analyses for structural characterizations of the isolated compounds. Many of his compounds have shown profound activities against different cancer cell lines. His research findings indicate that some of his compounds are very selective against cancer cell lines and do not damage at all the normal cells, and some isolated compounds are more antibacterial and antifungal than normal drugs available in the market.

Professor Tarafder has 131 research publications in journals at home and abroad. He was a recipient of UGC Prize for his contribution on organodioxygen complexes. Professor Tarafder has supervised altogether five Ph.D, one M.Phil, and thirty two M.Sc. students.

Dr. Mohammad Idrish Miah

Bron in 1971, Dr. Mohammad Idrish Miah is an Associate Professor of Physics, University of Chittagong. He graduated in Physics from Jahangirnagar University with First Class in both B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc. in 1991 and 1992, respectively. He obtained M.S. degree from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway and Ph.D degree from Griffith University, Australia.

He joined the Department of Physics, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology as a Lecturer in 1995. In 2004, he joined the Department of Physics, University of Toronto, Canada as a University Fellow. In May 2004, he joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Premier University, Chittagong as an Associate and later on joined Department of Physics, University of Chittagong in 2005 as a Lecturer, where he is now an Associate Professor.

Dr. Miah has been conducting research in the cutting-edge branches of physics and materials science and technology. He has more than 100 scientific publications in journals and two chapters in a book published in USA.

Most significant research work of Dr. Miah includes the observation of the photo-induced pure anomalus Hall effect (PIPAHE), multiphoton spin-polarization spectroscopy and the electrical detection of spin current/spin relaxation and determination of spin diffusion length in semiconductors. His first observation of the PIPAHE has been established in a book titled Spin Physics in Semiconductors published by Springer-Verlag, Germany.

Dr. Miah was the winner of Research Promotion Award for young scientists (2005) from Japan. He was the International Scientific Honorary Advisory Board Member for the 4^th, 5^th and 6^th International Symposium on Nanotechnology, Nano-biomimicry and Biomimetic Engineering, Baden-Baden, Germany. He is an Editorial Board Member of Nanotechnology Development and the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Quantum Electronics and Spintronics. He is an Honorary/Adjunct Professsor of QMNC, Griffith University, Australia.

Professor Dr. M. Jahiruddin

Born in 1955, Dr. M. Jahiruddin is a Professor in the Deprtment of Soil Science of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. He obtained B.Sc.Ag.(Hons.), and M.Sc. (Ag.) degrees from the BAU. He got a Commonwealth Scholarship and obtained Ph.D. degree from Aberdeen University, UK. He also got Commonwealth Fellowship for Post-doctoral research in UK; and STA and JSPS Research Fellowships in Japan.

Professor Jahiruddin joined Department of Soil Science at BAU as a Lecturer in 1979. He became a Professor in 1993. He is a member of many professional societies at home and abroad.

Professor Jahiruddin has completed seven research projects, funded by some international organizations. Presently he is leading three research projects - USDA funded project on Molecular Characterization of Boron Efficient Wheat Genotypes, DANIDA funded Soil Fertility Project and WB funded Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project.

Professor Jahiruddin had a pioneering role on identification and correction of Zinc deficiency in rice and Boron deficiency in wheat. He has more than 150 research publications in national and international journals.

In recognition of his significant contributions in the field of Micronutrient Management in Crop Production, the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences is honoring Professor Dr. M. Jahiruddin with the award of the BAS Gold Medal for Senior Scientist in Biological Sciences for the year 2009.

Professor Dr. Abdullah Harun Chowdhury

Dr. Abdullah Harun Chowdhury, Professor of Environmental Science Discipline, Khulna University, was born in 1970. He obtained BSc. (Hons) and M.Sc. degrees in Botany from Rajshahi University. His some important research works include Studies on the environmental threats on the Angiospermic plant resources of the South and South-West coastal areas of Bangladesh; Ecology of flora and fauna of St. Martins’ Island; Impact of environmental hazards on the plant diversity of the Sundarbans.

Dr. Chowdhury has published about 35 research papers in national and international journals. He has supervised three Ph.D, 12 MS and 26 B.Sc. students.

Nine marine and 23 fresh water algae have been recorded by him from Bangladesh. He successfully completed UGC, MOSICT and KU Research Cell funded 11 research projects; attended 46 international and national conferences/workshops at home and abroad and presented research papers in the conferences. He obtained six times Best Speaker/Presentation Award of conferences at home and abroad.

Dr. Chowdhury joined Environmental Science Department Discipline of the Khulna Univeristy as a Lecturer and now he is a Professor. He has also worked as a Program Officer of IUCN Bangladesh and Research Technician of Survey of Flora, operated by the Bangladesh National Herbarium.

Dr. Chowdhury is a Technical Member of the Committee of Wetlands and Aquatic Resources Management and Species Conservation of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Bangladesh.

Dr. Chowdhury worked as (1) Environmental Specialist of the ‘Emergency 2007 Cyclone Recovery and Restoration Project; (2) National Consultant on the ‘Identification and sustainable uses of Marine Algae and Aquatic Pollution of St.Martin’s island’; (3) Environmental Consultant on the ‘Second Phase and Twenty Five Years Master Plan of KDA’; and several other the projects. Professor Harun Chowdhury is a member of several scientific societies on Flora and Environmental Sciences.

Professor Dr. Haseena Khan

Born in 1954, Professor Dr. Haseena Khan obtained B.Sc. (Hons.) and M. Sc. in Biochemistry from Dhaka University in 1978 and 1980, respectively. She obtained Ph.D in Molecular Biology from the University of Sussex, England in 1985 under a Commonwealth Scholarship program. Professor Khan has worked as a research scientist in renowned laboratories in Toulouse, France and Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Haseena Khan joined the Department of Biochemistry University of Dhaka as a Lecturer in January 1982, and became a Professor in 1995. She was the first Chairperson of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka established in 2001.

Dr. Haseena Khan has been involved in biological research using molecular biology and genetic engineering tools since 1982. She has attracted several foreign and national funding agencies for carrying out research in molecular biology and genetic engineering. At present her research interest lies in studying the molecular biology of jute. She has played a pivoting role in getting the jute genome sequence as one of the team leaders in the sequencing project.

Dr. Haseena Khan’s group has successfully developed a tissue culture-independent method of efficient jute transformation and have identified a number of genes differentially expressed when jute is grown at temperatures below 20⁰C. Many post graduate students including M. Phil and Ph. D are working under Dr. Haseena Khan’s supervision.

Dr. Haseena Khan has served as one of the two scientists in the National Executive Committee on Biotechnology; and as a member of National Biotechnology Policy Formulation Committee. She is a fellow of BAS and TWOWS (Third World Organisation for Women in Science).

Dr. Haseena Khan has a number of national and international publications to her credit. She has contributed chapters in three books on agricultural biotechnology.

Professor Dr. M Q K Talukder

Professor Dr. M Q K Talukder was born in 1940. He graduated (MBBS) in 1962 from Dhaka Medical College. He worked as a Medical Officer and as an Assistant Registrar in Medicine at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital; and at the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research during 1963-67.

Dr. Talukder obtained CENTO fellowship and completed Diploma in Human Nutrition from London University in 1968. He was awarded Ph.D in 1972 from the University of Edinburgh, UK. From 1971 to 1979 Dr Talukder worked in UK as House Surgeon in Paediatrics, Senior House Officer and Registrar in General Medicine and Paediatrics. Dr Talukder passed Diploma in Child Health (DCH) in 1974 from Glasgow. He became a MRCP in Paediatrics from UK in 1977.

In 1979 as a Senior Consultant in Paediatrics in IPGM&R, Dr. Talukder established the Clinical unit of Childhood Malnutrition. He was one of the initiators of the child survival movement in Bangladesh in early 1980’s.

Dr Talukder initiated and spearheaded the breastfeeding movement and became the Founder Chairman of Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation (BBF). He was the Founder Professor of Paediatric Nutrition and Gastroenterology at IPGM&R during 1985 to 1992. He was elected FRCP and FCPS in 1996.

Professor Talukder conceptualized and established the unique Institute of Child and Mother Health (ICMH) at Matuail Dhaka. He together with a few philanthropists established the Centre for Woman and Child Health (CWCH) at Ashulia, Dhaka in 2004.

For his distinguished professional and scientific works, Professor Talukder received several awards and honors including Gold Medal and Ibrahim Memorial Oration 1999; Ibn Sina Award 2003; M R Khan Gold Medal; and Bangla Academy Honorary Fellowship.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of Woman and Child Health, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences is honoring Professor Dr. M Q K Talukder with the award of BAS-Professor Emeritus Dr. Sultan Ahmed Choudhury National Science and Technology Gold Medal 2009.

Dr. Mohammed Mizanur Rahman

Dr. Mohammed Mizanur Rahman was born in 1974. He completed his BSc (Hons.) and MSc from the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the University of Dhaka in 1997 and 1999, respectively. In March, 2000 Mr. Rahman joined as a Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry of DUET, Gazipur. He was awarded Monbusho Scholarship in 2002 for his Ph.D study in Kumamoto University, Japan. In recognition of his cutting edge contributions in analytical chemistry, he got young scientists’ award-2005 by the Inoue Science Foundation, Japan. He obtained Ph.D in 2005.

Dr. Rahman is an Associate Professor in the department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of the University of Dhaka. He is supervising one PhD one MPhil and ten MS students. His main research area includes solid-phase micro extraction processes, in-tube extraction, development of new packing materials for HPLC, chiral separation, preparation of polymer-silica hybrid materials, polymerization techniques including controlled radical and conventional radical polymerization processes, preparation of bilayer biocomposites and biomaterials for biomedical purposes.

Some of Dr. Rahman’s significant contributions were published in different books. He delivered lectures as keynote speaker and as invited lecturer in some international conferences, and is a reviewer of over 10 international journals. He has published over 45 research papers in international and national journals.

In 2009 Dr. Rahman received research fund from the International Foundation for Science (IFS) and in 2010 from the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS).

In recognition of his contribution in the field of Analytical Chemistry and Materials Science, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences is honoring Dr. Mohammed Mizanur Rahman with the award BAS -TWAS Young Scientists Prize 2009.

Professor Dr. Sabita Rezwana Rahman

Professor Dr. Sabita Rezwana Rahman was born in 1970. She obtained her undergraduate (1994) and postgraduate (1995) degrees in Microbiology securing First Class First position in both. She got Academic Merit Award and Dean’s Award for her outstanding academic performances. Sabita R Rahman joined the Department of Microbiology, Dhaka University as a Lecturer in 1996.

Sabita R Rahman obtained Ph.D degree from University of Strathclyde, UK, in 2002, in the field of Immunology. Her research work included the rapid and low-cost detection of the bacterium Shigella and the role of virulence factors in propagating physiological aspects of infection. She developed two monoclonal antibodies for sensitive and specific immunological and molecular detection of Shigella. In 2010, Dr. Rahman was promoted to the position of a Professor in Microbiology, Dhaka University.

Dr. Sabita has been the principal investigator in a number of nationally important research projects including antimicrobial susceptibility and frequency of occurrence of MRSA in clinical blood isolates in hospitals, incidence and rapid diagnosis of acute bacterial meningitis in childhood in Bangladesh, drug resistance pattern of typhoid and non-typhoid bacteriaemic Salmonella among children in Dhaka city, isolation and characterization of Salmonella and E. coli from domestic and industrial waste; study of antimicrobial susceptibility of Group B Streptococus isolated from nasopharynx of children living in urban slum area; rapid genotyping of MRSA isolates using oligonucleotide arrays and Multiplex PCR and a host of other projects.

The main focus of her research area are bacterial pathogenesis and multi-drug resistance in new strains. Dr. Sabita has published more than 50 scientific papers in nationally and internationally reputed journals.

Dr. Abdullah Shams Bin Tariq

Abdullah Shams Bin Tariq was born in 1974. He did his B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. degrees in Physics from the University of Rajshahi and obtained First Class in both the examinations. Mr. Shams joined the University of Rajshahi in 2000 as a Lecturer. He got PhD from Southampton, UK under a Commonwealth Scholarship Program. He is now an Associate Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Rajshahi. He is also a Junior Associate of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy. He won the 2003 Razzak-Shamsun Prize for research in Physics in 2010. He was selected as a member of the Global Young Academy (GYA).

Dr. Shams has been working both in nuclear and particle physics. In nuclear physics, he is in the Nuclear Research Group led by Professor Arun K. Basak of Rajshahi University. They are trying to establish a novel microscopic method of obtaining the potential between nuclei employing the energy density formalism.

In particle physics, he has worked in lattice QCD, where he has been part of one of the earliest unquenched calculations of B_K and a spectroscopy calculation of double-charmed baryons. He is also interested in studies of the _b lifetime, heavy pentaquarks, nuclear potentials from lattice QCD, limits on the variability of standard model parameters to produce a congenial universe etc. which remain areas of active interest where current progress is being made. He has publications in several leading journals.

Dr. Shams is a pioneer in establishing an e-resource consortium of academic libraries under the auspices of the BAS supported by the Program for Enhancement of Research Information (PERI) of the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP). For this he visited dozens of institutions and trained hundreds of librarians and academics.

In collaboration with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and SISSA eLab in Trieste, Italy he is engaged in an effort to establish the first high performance computing (HPC) facility in Bangladesh open to researchers. His aim is to build a cluster for parallel computing of at least several hundred processors at the University of Rajshahi for the researchers of Bangladesh.

Dr. S. M. Abdur Rahman

Dr. S. M. Abdur Rahman was born in 1970. He is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka. He obtained his B. Pharm. (Hons.) and M. Pharm. degrees from Dhaka University in 1993 and 1995, respectively securing First Class First position in both the examinations. He received Dean Award from the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Dhaka University. In the M. Pharm. his research entitled “Hepatoprotective principles from Picrorhiza kurrooa, a medicinal herb of Nepal, and worked under supervision of Prof. Dr. A. K. Azad Choudhury.

Dr. Rahnam joined Dhaka University as a Lecturer in 1997 in the Department of Pharmacy. He got Monbusho scholarship in 1997 and got his Ph.D in 2001 from Osaka University, Japan. In the course of his Ph.D, he discovered a novel organic compound for successful conversion of aliphatic amines into alcohols.

Dr. Abdur Rahman returned to Dhaka University in 2001 and became an Assistant Professor in 2002. He was awarded Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) post-doctoral fellowship in 2002. He successfully developed a novel Palladium (Pd)-catalyzed tandem cyclization reaction to construct useful molecules for diverse applications in material science. Next, various bridged diarylethenes which might be interesting in developing molecular rotor and switches, were constructed efficiently by a Palladium catalyzed tandem cyclization reaction. He got a Patent in 2005 for his work in this post-doctoral research.

Dr. A. Rahman was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Science, Osaka University and continued research program in bioorganic and medicinal chemistry and extended work in designing and development of finely-tuned RNA analogues and investigated their applications to various genomic technologies such as antisense, antigene, RNA interference (RNAi) etc. One of his reserach products is now commercially available from BNA Inc., a Japanese biotech. Company.

In 2008, Dr. Abdur Rahman was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy, Dhaka University. In 2009, he was awarded JSPS-UGC bilateral project jointly by Japan Society for Promotion of Science and University Grants Comission of Bangladesh. He received COMSTECH-TWAS Grants in 2010 for a project titled “Synthesis and biological investigation of benzimidazole derivatives” and grants from the Ministry of Science and Information & Commnication Technology, for synthesizing some important active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in Bangladesh. Dr. Rahman has published about 35 scientific papers, including two review articles, in journals in USA, UK, Germany, France, and Japan.

Dr. Nasima Akhter

Dr. Nasima Akhter was born in 1970. She graduated from Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College in 1995, M. Phil from BSMMU, Dhaka in 2001. She obtained Monbusho scholarship in 2005 and received Ph.D from Kanazawa University, Japan in 2008 in the field of Nuclear Medicine. She also received JSUM fellowship training on advanced obstetric ultrasound techniques from Kagawa University, Japan. Dr. Nasima has been working as a Nuclear Medicine Physician in Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) since Feb. 1998.

Dr. Nasima Akhter’s research finding strengthened the indication of whole-body radionuclide bone scintigraphy at initial presentation of breast cancer for staging, treatment planning and follow-up. She worked on development of new radiotracer for brain imaging in Alzheimer’s disease and found para-iodo vesamicol (pIV) as a potential sigma-1 receptor imaging agent, on which she was awarded the Doctoral degree. Dr. Nasima also has contribution in the field of nuclear cardiology, developed reference data of myocardial thickening for Asian population and found significant racial and gender difference from those of American population.

At present, Dr. Nasima has been working on Nuchal Translucency (NT) based faetal screening for congenital anomaly at first trimester of pregnancy (MOSICT project) and usefulness of non-radioactive Iodine adjunct medication with radioiodine therapy in Graves’ disease.

Dr. Nasima was a recipient of a number of awards including Young Scientist Award 2011, and Gold Medal Award from the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Bangladesh.

Dr. Nasima has published 40 papers in national and international journals and delivered 15 presentations at home and abroad.

Dr. Mohammad Musharof Hossain

Dr. Mohammad Musharof Hossain was born in 1975. He obtained B. Sc. (Hons) and M. Sc. from the Botany Department of Chittagong University being placed in First Class First position and Ph.D degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. Presently he is serving as an Associate Professor, Department of Botany, University of Chittagong.

Area of research of Dr. Musharof is Plant Biotechnology. He did scale propagation of six indigenous orchids of Bangladesh through tissue culture technique in a project entitled “Development of tissue culture technique in some economically important orchids of Bangladesh”. His major contribution is in molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of Orchid Mycorrhizal Fungi, Virus indexing and production of virus-free plants, Biological hardening of in vitro raised plants, Micropropagation of medicinal plants and Genetic transformation in Cymbidium orchid. He participated in a number of national and international Conferences/Seminars/Symposia/ Workshops.

Research interests of Dr. Musharof include plant tissue culture, genetic transformation and crop improvements, secondary metabolite production, phytochemical studies of therapeutic orchids and medicinal plants, artificial/synthetic seed production, cryopreservation and Gene Bank development for economically important plants, enzyme and protein engineering and drug designing, molecular characterization, genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of ecomomically important mycorrhiza and, other microbes for biological hardening of tissue culture raised plants.
