IN BEVERLY Hills, there is a popular parlour game called Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Anyone playing it has to make the connection, in no more than six moves, between a named film star and the bogbrush-haired actor using other stars of the silver screen and the films they have in common. If rock had a version of the game, John Paul Jones would be an ideal choice of anchorman. There would be so many routes by which to reach him.
You could approach from a "birth of rock'n'roll" perspective, citing his playing with Shadows bassist Jet Harris and sessions for Del Shannon and Bo Diddley. Glam and prog rock could be covered by his playing on later albums by Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno, stage musicals by his arrangements for Lionel Bart and classical by a variety of commissions he has undertaken in the Nineties. …
