Asser Rig and Ebbe (Skjalm Hvides sons) incited the Zealanders to take revenge for the killing of the popular Knud Lavard, and at Ringsted Landsting (court) Magnus was convicted outlaw.
As king Niels nevertheless called back Magnus, the Zealanders revolted and chose Knud Lavards brother, Erik as king. For three years Erik fought for the crown, particularly supported by the Zealanders, while the Jutlanders agreed with king Niels and Magnus.
Clarification came when the Skåningers with the archbishop Asser in front joint Erik. At Fodevig in 1134 Magnuss large army was overcome by Eriks iron covered rider crowd.
Magnus was killed, king Niels fled to the town of Slesvig, but the town-dwellers avenged by killing king Niels.Erik Emune (the always memorable) was a tough man, who took bloody revenge over Magnuss supporters, so that he even had his own brother and his sons killed.
Three years later he himself was killed at Urnehoved ting (court) by a Jutlandic nobleman, Sorte Plov.Erik Emune was son of Erik Ejegod.
He was in 1132 married to Malmfred, daughter of grand duke Mstislav of Russia and Christine of Sweden, and sister to Ingeborg, who was married to Knud Lavard, and earlier married to the deceased Norwegian king Sigurd Jorsalfar.
No children. For some years Erik Emune had lived together with the mistress Thunna.
