Maria Mitchell House

The Mitchell House, birthplace of astronomer Maria Mitchell, offers a blend of architectural, historical and cultural interests. Visitors catch a glimpse of 19th century Quaker life, and have the opportunity to learn about diverse topics including historic preservation, women's history, and Quakerism on Nantucket.
Built in 1790, this typical Quaker house had been in the Mitchell family since 1818, the year Maria Mitchell, America's first professional woman astronomer, was born. The home became an historic house museum in 1902, when Maria Mitchell's family, former pupils, and supporters founded the Maria Mitchell Association. The house has been a memorial to one of Nantucket's most illustrious daughters ever since.

The House contains many original family artifacts, including the family's tall case clock, family portraits and many of Maria Mitchell's personal belongings, such as her telescope, beer mugs and opera glasses. The House has changed little since its construction in 1790.
