USF in Tampa is the main location of the University of South Florida and a member of the USF System, comprised of USF, USF St. Petersburg and USF Sarasota-Manatee. The three member institutions are separately accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and together have an annual budget of $1.6 billion and an annual economic impact of $4.4 billion. The USF System is governed by the 13-member USF Board of Trustees. Dr. Judy Genshaft is Chief Executive Officer of the USF System and President of the University of South Florida.

At USF, over 30,300 undergraduates, more than 9,000 graduates, over 650 Doctor of Medicine candidates and more than 1,700 non-degree-seeking students make up the total campus enrollment of over 42,000. The students are a diverse group, coming from every state, every U.S. territory and more than 150 countries around the world. International students make up 7 percent of the total student population.

Students at USF are high academic achievers. New freshmen for the Fall 2015 semester had an average high school GPA of 4.08, an average SAT score of 1223, and average ACT score of 28. Over 50 percent of new freshmen graduated in the top 20 percent of their class, and 58 percent are Bright Futures Scholarship recipients. Ten students in the 2015 freshman class are National Merit Scholars, one is a National Achievement Scholars and 10 are National Hispanic Scholars.

The university's faculty are world-class scholars. Instructional faculty at USF number more than 1,700. The university has over 45 endowed chairs and 30 endowed professorships.
