Gangavathi, before independence was under the Nizam state and after Independence and reorganisation of states,it became part of Raichur district in Karnataka State. Formerly known as Neelavati,Gangavathi was the centre for development activities in agricultural sector and was rightly called as the "Rice Bowl of Karnataka"
Gangavathi is located in the newly formed Koppal District of Karnataka State.It is surrounded by KhisKinde(Anegundi),Hampi and Tungabhadra Dam.The City is Taluk head Quarter located at 43Km from Koppal and 350Km from Bagalore the State Head Quarter.The near Raiway Station is Hospet about 40km from Gangavathi City.The Eminent historical City of Hampi is only at 13km from Gangavathi city attracting large numbers of tourists.After construction of Tungabhadra Dam at Munirabad about 40km from City the agricultural,production of area increased rapidly. Specialy, production of Paddy,Sugar cane,Banana,Ground nuts,Cottons etc.,This city is the leading producer of rice in Karnataka.There about 30 to 40 rice mills nd 70 small-Scale industries, 50 to 60% are flour mills,cotten ginning mills,spinning mil etc., are the major industries located in Gangavathi.this development resulted in migration of the labour to the City.The average rainfall is 509.15mm, South-West mansoon begins int the month of June and continues up to Setember. The climate of the town generally dry(41.1o and 14.6o ).The population of the ULB 1,14,642 as per 2011 census, where it was 1,01,392 in 2001, comprising 23,265 house holds. Person belongs SC/ST 12.68%. The city has a 56.66% litracy rate.

Computerisation : We are very happy to intimate the citizens of Gangavathi city that we have computerized the collection of Property Tax , Birth and Death certificates from 1990 to till date under state Government Nirmala Nagar computerization scheme, from now on wards citizens are requested to visit the citizen service centre at the office for registration and getting of Birth and Death certificates by paying service fee. Citizens are requested to make use of this facility. Birth and Death Online application is launched on 28/06/2008.
