Report Card Narratives

Burlington City High School is a six-year secondary school that includes grades seven through twelve with a total current enrollment of 700. The NJ Department of Education and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools have accredited grades nine through twelve, comprised of 489 students. Thirty-nine percent of students in grades nine through twelve are students from the neighboring Edgewater Park community. BCHS has served as the receiving district for the Edgewater Park School District, which educates students from kindergarten through eighth grade, for many years.

The ultimate goal of every faculty member is to instill a love and understanding of the value of learning. Students are expected to develop a solid foundation in the academic disciplines and are encouraged to develop a strong sense of personal identity, rational thought process, and excellent communication skills.

Burlington City High School offers its students over 120 course selections in academic, technical, practical and fine arts areas with honors and advanced placement courses for the academically talented. Programs such as the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and a nationally recognized music program provide opportunities for students to assume responsible leadership roles. Burlington City High School also offers competitive Group 1 athletics for several sports in grades seven through twelve as well as many significant co-curricular activities.

Academic achievement, however, has been the springboard for student success. Seventy-six percent of the graduating class of 2016 attended institutions of higher learning. The class of 2016 achieved an average SAT score of 1359.

Burlington City High School offers its students an alternative education program. Classes, taught by certified staff, are offered for students who desire an educational setting that offers small group instruction. The high school’s alternative education program is a major factor in reducing the district’s drop-out rate.

During the 2015/2016 school year, BCHS researched best practices and emerging trends relating to high school schedules. As a result, Burlington City High School is implementing a 4-Day Rotating Drop Schedule in the 2016-2017 school year. The new schedule includes a S.M.A.R.T. (Students Maximizing Achievement Resources Relationships and Time) lunch program of activities and tutoring.
