Despite losing his left leg in an Iraqi battlefield nearly 12 years ago, retired Sgt. Daniel Cowart said, if given the chance to relive that moment, he wouldn’t hesitate.

“I think about those events every day,” Cowart said. “I wouldn’t hesitate – I would do the same thing, but maybe a bit faster.”

For his bravery on the battlefield, Cowart was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross March 20 on Cooper Field. It is the Army’s second highest medal for valor. Cowart is one of 13,462 Soldiers to receive the award since its inception in 1918.

“Today is the 16th anniversary of the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, so it’s fitting that we gather to honor the battle of one of our own from that fight,” Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk II, III Corps and Fort Hood commander, said.

On Mother’s Day 2007, Cowart was serving in Company D, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, deployed to Iraq, when an unplanned traffic control point went awry. After Cowart noticed a suspicious vehicle coming toward them, two men exited the vehicle – one holding a rifle and the other wearing a suicide vest.
