Red Moon

Red Moon (レッド・ムーン Reddo Mūn) is an unused kaiju from the unmade 1971 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Red Moon.
Design
Though no concept art is known to exist of the creature, the script for Godzilla vs. Red Moon describes Red Moon as having a ferocious face, single eye and wings on its back.[1] Artwork by artist "Hurricane" Ryu Hariken depicts Red Moon as a grotesque dragon-like creature with a long neck, small, dark wings, and massive clawed back appendages.
History
Godzilla vs. Red Moon
Red Moon came from the Moon, and some time later Erabus appeared. The Japanese Self Defense Force thought they could lure the two kaiju together so they could defeat each other, but they turn out to be two members of the same species and of opposite genders. Later, they have a son dubbed Halfun, who is killed later on. Stricken with grief, Red Moon and Erabus go berserk and attack Japan, but Godzilla intervenes and defeats them. A child pleads with Godzilla to spare the grieving couple, and he relents, throwing Erabus into the sea while Red Moon flies back into space.
Trivia
- For a relatively long amount of time, it was thought by the Western fanbase that Red Moon and his family were to simply be portrayed by reusing the suits from the Tsuburaya film Daigoro vs. Goliath. However, Daigoro vs. Goliath actually came after Godzilla vs. Red Moon was considered by Toho. Popular images of Red Moon and Erabus on the internet are actually just Photoshopped images of Goliath and Daigoro's mother from Daigoro vs. Goliath.
