Maruuk, renowned as Maruuk Thousandbones,[1][2][3][4] was the namesake and one of the two founders[5][6][7] of the Maruuk centaur. After making a name for himself battling the Burning Legion during the War of the Ancients, he and his wife, Teera, led the centaur to settle on the Ohn'ahran Plains of the Dragon Isles. He was the centaur's greatest warrior[8] and wielded the spear Batubar the Relentless, which is said to have been infused with power by Ohn'ahra.[9]
Biography[]
During the War of the Ancients, when the Burning Legion invaded Azeroth, the centaur clans of Kalimdor fought and died, until Maruuk arose to fight the invaders with his spear, Batubar. He earned the name "Thousandbones" after creating a pile of demon corpses one thousand strong, and subsequently limped back to his clan to heal his wounds. The other clans, who feared Maruuk's strength, spread rumors that his wounds made him too weak to lead and sent assassins to kill him in his sleep. Maruuk's wife, Teera, defended him by killing both the assassins and the clan leaders who'd sent them the same night. At dawn, she exposed their treachery against Maruuk.
Her actions were considered just, but she subsequently rejected the clans. She and Maruuk set out across Kalimdor in search of a new home. Many centaur were inspired by their honor and followed them, forming a new clan. The Wild God Ohn'ahra guided the centaur through the wind until, after months of wandering, they arrived in what is now the Ohn'ahran Plains. There, Ohn'ahra revealed herself and let the centaur know that this would be their new home. Upon seeing this, Maruuk was at peace and died from the infections in his wounds. His spirit was guided into the sky by the chanting of his people.[1] The grief-stricken Teera took up leadership of the clan and named them "Maruuk" in honor of their fallen hero.[2]
Maruuk was buried with his spear in the largest of the Eternal Kurgans. Millennia later, necromancers of Clan Ukhel invaded the area, and Tombcaller Arban exhumed Maruuk and Teera's weapons from their graves so that their spirits could be raised into undeath.[10] During the Nokhud Offensive, Gravelord Monkh summoned the two ancestors and tried to take control of them to make them fight on behalf of Clan Nokhud. The attempt failed, as Maruuk and Teera reacted with rage at the sight of necromancy in their sacred ground and killed Monkh. Adventurers then defeated the two centaur's spirits, returning them to their rest.[11] The heroes retrieved their weapons, Batubar and Teera's bow Sarantuya, and laid them to rest in the kurgan in Teerakai, where they could be protected more easily. Maruuk's spirit briefly appeared, thanked the heroes for their actions, and commented that it was good to know that his people had more friends than they did when they originally left Kalimdor.[7]

Notes[]
- Maruuk has many parallels with Huln Highmountain. Both were heroes of the War of the Ancients who led a namesake group of their people (the Maruuk centaur and the Highmountain tauren) to leave Kalimdor and settle in a new homeland on an island chain (the Ohn'ahran Plains and Highmountain). Both of them wielded spears blessed by Ohn'ahra (Batubar and the Eagle Spear), and both of their spirits allegedly ascended into the sky upon death.
