Server blade

  • ️Thu Oct 13 2011

A server blade or just blade is a self-contained server on which each World of Warcraft realm runs. Multiple blades fit into an enclosure which provides the power, cooling, connectivity, and management to each blade. The blades themselves contain only the core processing elements, making them hot-swappable. HP refers to the entire package as a BladeSystem. By consolidating and housing multiple servers in a single enclosure, energy costs are significantly reduced, cabling is drastically reduced and managing servers is simplified.[1]

Blizzard has auctioned off retired blades in the past for charity,[2][3][4] including a 15th Anniversary one for the BlizzCon 2019 charity auction.[5]

Trivia[]

  • Carlos Lucero has the Proudmoore server blade.[6]
  • Sodapoppin has the Aegwynn server blade.[7]
  • The Yogscast have the The Venture Co. (EU) server blade.[8]
  • German (DE) server blades, have different details when compared to the other blades. Presumably because the plaque/plexiglass were done local to Germany, the contractor might not have had the same service capabilities like the ones in US for example. Subsequently, the plaques of DE server blades are a bit thicker, they do not have a lamination layer over it (eg. they are not glossy/reflective) and represent a black textured rectangle with a brushed metallic look to the details (text and border). The brushed look is directional, but depending on how the plaque ended up on the template, the direction can be seen in both up/down and left/right. Additionaly, the plexiglass cover with the World of Warcraft logo is not semi transparent like the rest of the world's server blades, but fully opaque.[9]
  • The 10 year anniversary server blades were specifically the HPE BL20p and HPE BL25p models. They can be differentiated by the number of RAM slots. BL25p has two rows of 4 RAM slots either side of the CPU slots, whereas the BL20p has less. Possibly, other server blade models from the same line were used.
