This is the second issue of the new series titled Globalistics and Globalization Studies. Globalistics<br>may be regarded as a sort of systemic and more or less integrated 'core' within Global Studies.<br>At present Global Studies function in two main dimensions – in the research of global political, economic,<br>cultural and social processes, on the one hand, and in the realm of teaching – manifesting themselves in<br>the creation of various Global Studies programs and courses for university students who learn to see the<br>world in its entirety and variety. A review of introductory international relations, international studies, and global studies textbooks reveals that each field defines itself differently: one in terms of its central focus on the diplomatic and strategic relations of states, the second more broadly by including transnational transactions of all kinds, and the third focusing on globalization as both an object of analysis and a lens through which to view nearly all phenomena. However, in reading past the definitional chapters there are clear overlaps-most notably with regard to each introductory textbook's treatment of globalization. Close examination of recently published introductory textbooks and those well into multiple editions reveals that global ization is treated as a fundamental aspect of each of the three fields. While both Interna tional Relations (IR) and International Studies (IS) scholars have contributed significantly to further broadening of both IR and IS in order to become increasingly "global," other scholars have moved to create a new field of study called Global Studies (GS). This new field of GS developed in the 1990s as scholars from multiple disciplines began to study the many dimensions of globalization. While globalization remains an essentially contested concept, most scholars accept as uncontroversial that it refers to the many strings that connect the world such that pulling on one string in one place will make a change somewhere else. Globalization's central dynamics include interconnectivity, re configuration of space and time, and enhanced mobility. GS is the only field that places the contested concept of globalization at the center of its intellectual initiative.

Globalizing 'Global Studies': Vehicle for Disciplinary and Regional Bridges?

The most contentious and critical questions of contemporary times relate to the nature, scope, impact and conceptualization of globalization. The intensified impact of globalization and the acceptance that it is a contemporary social reality has manifested itself noticeably in a variety of disciplines. However, the inherently multidimensional processes of globalization demand new insights. The resultant rise of a Global Studies approach is expected to be unencumbered by dominant perspectives and existing academic loyalties by placing global theorizing and issues first. In light of this context, the paper raises several epistemological and ontological questions while outlining the broad contours of this emerging field. The analysis is based on academic literature as well as the examination of a selection of global studies programs in academic institutions to ascertain the contemporary application and perceptions of what constitutes global studies. The ensuing discussion explains why global studies is regarded as an overwhelmingly North American phenomenon. Finally, the paper suggests ways of broadening the disciplinary lens, which may also help global studies to overcome the wide regional divide.
