5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 February 2018
I’ve been a fan of all things Gerry Anderson since my childhood, and that’s a long time. Fortunately, living in the US we’ve had access to most of his creative output.
The quality of the new Captain Scarlet is no exception. The stories are exciting, creative and in many respects on par or better than some of the original series. Don’t get me wrong, I love the original CS, this just adds so much more action with so many simultaneous elements happening all at once. Most stories are a strap yourself in rollercoaster ride from start to finish!
I already owned the new series on DVD so I was a bit hesitant to get the Blu-ray, As I didn’t really know if the upgrade would make a significant difference with the CGI. I can tell that the upgrade is very noticeable, crystal clear pictures that rival live action in certain spots matched by heart pounding audio.
I hadn’t watched these stories in a number of years but I played disc 1 and plan to watch the entire series over the weekend.
The new credit sequences are nice changes, supposedly what the creative team originally wanted to do but for time and budget reasons they had to stick with scenes from the first story. I actually liked the original title sequence and always loved seeing the Supermarionation at the beginning of GA series. In the case of new Captain Scarlet this had been changed to Hypermarionation, but that has been removed on the new title sequence. Perhaps because the team has achieved something above hyper in this new release?
There are a few extras, nothing really that special but nice additions to a great package.
Highly recommended.

Report4.0 out of 5 stars A solid, if sometimes inconsistent retelling of the cult classic Captain Scarlet TV series.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2017
Pros:
- Imaginative set and technology designs.
- Storylines are entertaining and highlight nuances of the Captain Scarlet universe.
- Dated, sometimes inconsistent CGI animation has a strange charm to it. Kinda like watching an old videogame play out.Cons:
- BluRay version lacks a surround sound mix, despite special features expressing the series was originally mixed so.
- Some episodes end abruptly, tying up loose ends off-screen.
- Characterisation changes from classic series could put off purists.3 people found this helpful
Report5.0 out of 5 stars Spectrum is CGI
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 May 2020
I was 13 when this was originally shown on TV & had the original DVDs.
This is still as good all these years later & deserves a lot more recognition than it got at the time of release. Episodes & stories have held up really well & are better than some of the classic series episodes. The blu ray picture is amazing & it looks fantastic & vibrant. Great special features too & the final two episodes are in the right order.
The new opening titles take a while to get used to but it is explained inside the cover why these new opening titles were made.My only complaint is not all of the episodes are in the correct order & feel that if the final two episodes have been corrected then the others should have been too.
Apart from that this is a great box set that network have managed to put together.

Report5.0 out of 5 stars The Animation and Action are Amazing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2017
This series came out in 2005 and was horribly treated with its airing on TV. It was also never given a chance in America despite, in my opinion, being one of the best animated series at the time. It still holds up with animation that is superior in some cases to Star Wars Rebels, and New Captain Scarlet is over 10 years old. Using motion capture much of the character animation is incredibly realistic. This shows how much was put into creating this series. I prefer this type of realistic animation to what Thunderbirds Are Go is doing. The stories are exciting with a fair share of humor and intrigue. I am enjoying the series in glorious HD. It is great to see the textures of the materials and the detail that went into the look of this series. If you enjoy well paced action stories then check this out. You do not have to be a fan of the original. The only downside is the series is only a total of 26 episodes over 2 seasons which is a shame. After watching this series, you will want more!

Report5.0 out of 5 stars Spectrum Is Green...again
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 December 2017
I have this already on DVD so was pleased to see this on Bluray at last. I am a great fan of the original version but this is a superb version. The stories are great, and the new vision of the vehicles and uniforms are worthy successors. Everything is here. I rewatch the series a lot, enjoying the storylines and the look of the universe that has been created for this incarnation.
The playback of the bluray verses the dvd has been improved but I would not say that it was of the highest quality and there are still some grainy scenes but do not let that stop you. It looks better than the dvd version, just that it could have looked better.
I recommend this series to everyone...I just approach them at bus stops and say, "Hey, you there. Why are you not at home watching Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet series? It's superb!"

Report5.0 out of 5 stars Nicely done, exciting and fun

What a creative genius Gerry Anderson was.
I grew-up with his programmes and it is a delight to watch what is essentially an updated version with a fast-paced, thoughtfully put together, imaginative series of stories.
I am especially fond of the redesigned and modernised technology in the show and the special effects.

4.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on 9 August 2024

4.0 out of 5 stars Superbe série ...
Reviewed in France on 12 August 2017
5.0 out of 5 stars The New Scarlet Letters Are Region A, B, & C
Reviewed in the United States on 4 September 2022
Well, I guess I should start with the headline statement. It is absolutely region free. The problem is in the fine print. I looked on the back of my copy to make sure. It is region A,B,&C but it is in the pal format which the U.S. does not use. I don't know about the newer Blu-Ray players vs. the older ones, but my Sony 4k player does play the pal format. So that might be why some people have no problems with playing this title. I have actually run into the opposite problem. Amazon will list something as region B and I'll get it home and it plays fine and it says region free on the back of the box, it's just in the pal format. sooooo anyway, back to the region (I mean reason) you called. I must admit, I wasn't really a big fan of the CGI in this New Captain Scarlet at first. But I have come around and don't think it's too bad. It was 2005 after all. As someone else has already mentioned, the voice acting is pretty good and the stories are pretty good as well. So for me the dated CGI was easy to overlook. I don't think I have to mention how far we've come since then, but I guess I just did. Oh well, I did enjoy this series and would buy it again in a heartbeat. Just make sure you know what your player is capable of before ordering. I have had to contact the people that actually put this stuff out on Blu-Ray more than once to see what the region code really was because no one will put up a picture of the back of box where this info is usually listed. Well, I hope this helps somebody.
5.0 out of 5 stars Plays on US Spec Panasonic and LG Blu Ray players without issues - Look fabulous
Reviewed in the United States on 6 January 2024
This plays perfectly on the two Blu Ray players I tried in the house. I can tell you the discs play perfectly on a Panasonic DP-UB154P and an LG UBKC90. I remember seeing this series on the VOOM HD channel on Cablevision and was impressed at the stories and animation. It was nice to finally more fluid movement of the characters, The upgrade of the marionettes from the earlier Anderson series to a more realistic look was hamstrung by the (still) lack of walking,. While not as sophisticated and the hybrid models/CG of the recent Thunderbirds Are Go, it is a great series, The stories are quite good and the CG is excellent. But the best part is they play here in the US without issue. Nice!!
