4.0 out of 5 stars Quite old but still worthwhile

This book is a compact but well written, balanced and effective summary of the period in question. It's a pleasure to read and excellent value for time. It gives good coverage to the politicians and intellectuals but it's too short to really go into detail on any particular topic. It is, however, a bit old fashioned with much less coverage of social history than would be typical for a modern general history - and of course, there has been a lot of useful scholarship since. Presumably, the New Edinburgh History of Scotland series will eventually include a volume to cover this period. Until then, this book remains very worthwhile.
