Alexander of Hales. A noted English philosopher and theologian; born at Hales, Gloucestershire about 1185; died in Paris, 1245. One of the ablest of the schoolmen, he supported the most extreme claims of the church with great vigor and subtlety. His chief work was ‘The Sum of Theology’ (1475). He was called “The Irrefragable Doctor,” “The Doctor of Doctors,” “The Fountain of Life.”
