“I picked up the guitar at 15 because of Taylor Swift,” Nesbitt tells Billboard. “I heard the Fearless album, and was like fan-girling her hard for years. And then, last year, she put my song ‘The Best You Had’ on her favorite songs playlist and I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ It was the best moment.”
Nesbitt reveals that her biggest musical inspirations are “strong women that write their own songs,” such as Debbie Harry, Stevie Nicks and Taylor Swift. Alanis Morissette is another musician she admires, and she notes that Jagged Little Pill — which changed the way Nesbitt thought about writing lyrics — is her favorite album of all time.
The “Somebody Special” singer divulges that she would love to collaborate with Calvin Harris one day. “He is Scottish; I’m Scottish,” she says. “He makes great music, and I listened to his music at school as a kid [up] until now. And I just love the way that he keeps evolving and working with new, upcoming people, so he’s on the list.”
In the video, Nesbitt also chats about her first ever job, her biggest guilty pleasure, her backstage rituals and more. Plus, she discusses her latest single “Loyal to Me,” which she says was inspired by ’90s R&B music and pop, such as TLC and Destiny’s Child.
