In the face of uncertainty

I’ve thought long and hard about what to write about in this, my first column of 2025. I recently returned from Sierra Leone where I read about Hungary’s Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme. Last year, 32 students from Sierra Leone were awarded scholarships to study in Hungary for their bachelor’s and master’s degrees with one of the 32 pursuing a Doctorate. I am strangely heartened by this, even though it had absolutely nothing to do with me at all.

Births, deaths, marriages drop

According to preliminary data, 6,339 children were born and 11,773 people died in December 2024. The number of births lessened by 4.1%, that of deaths by 7.0% and that of marriages by 25% compared to the same period of the previous year.
