The reigning Super Bowl champion New England Patriots released linebacker Roman Phifer on Monday.

Phifer, 36, split the inside-linebacking duties with Ted Johnson this past season, posting 30 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks as well as an interception and a fumble recovery in 13 games, including one start.

The 14-year NFL veteran won three Super Bowls in four seasons with New England.

Phifer has totalled 1,118 tackles, 29 sacks, 11 interceptions and eight fumble recoveries in 211 NFL games (118 starts) since being drafted in in the second round – 31st overall – by the Los Angeles Rams in 1991.

The UCLA product toiled eight seasons for the Rams and two more with the New York Jets before joining the Patriots on Aug. 3, 2001.
