Jamey Carroll was recalled from Columbus today.
CLEVELAND -- That didn't take long.
The Indians recalled utility infielder Jamey Carroll from his rehab assignment at Class AAA Buffalo today and optioned utility man Josh Barfield to Columbus. Carroll broke a bone in his left hand in the ninth inning of the final exhibition game of spring training on April 4 and was placed on the disabled list before the season opener against Texas.
This is Barfield's second trip to Columbus. He broke camp with the Tribe, but was sent down when Aaron Laffey was recalled on April 14. Barfield is hitting 1.000 (3-for-3) with one RBI with the Indians. He's hitting .306 (15-for-49) with three doubles and 11 RBI at Columbus.
Carroll's rehab started Friday when the Indians returned from a seven-game trip against Detroit, Toronto and Boston. On Monday, manager Eric Wedge said that Carroll could be a candidate to bat leadoff if slumping Grady Sizemore was dropped in the order.
