The Smith/Blackadder era got under way in sensational fashion at the North Harbour Stadium in Albany tonight as the All Blacks ran in fifteen tries to overrun Tonga 102-0.
The All Blacks were devastating with the ball in hand and allowed the unfortunate Tongans very few opportunities to secure any worthwhile possession.Local lock forward Troy Flavell, making his test debut, scored a superb first half hat trick of tries, becoming only the second All Black forward to do so.
Another debutant , Doug Howlett, had an equally sensational start to his career after coming on in the second half to replace Christian Cullen. He scored his first try after 20 seconds and added another later in the half.
The All Blacks built up a 48-0 half time lead with seven tries - Flavell's three, the other scorers being Ieremia, Cullen, Umaga and Hammett. In the second half Howlett added two and Blackadder, Kronfeld, Tiatia, Umaga, Brown and Marshall completed the try feast.
Fly half Tony Brown converted 12 and kicked a penalty to add to his try - a total of 32 points.
A comprehensive victory and a demoralising defeat.
