Freedmens Cemetery in Chalmette, Louisiana - Find a Grave Cemetery

Freedmen's Cemetery was active from 1867-1876. If you go into the Chalmette National Cemetery, there is an opening to the right to enter the Chalmette Battlefield. There is a plaque there to show the approximate location where it stood. The cemetery was run by the Freedmen's Bureau and many buried there were people who died at Freedmen's Hospital. Many of those buried there were originally buried pre-1867 in the Chalmette National Cemetery before they decided to only bury those who were in the military.
