WELCOME!
You can now access this page by using www.smalltownok.com
Thanks for checking out my pictures! If you recognize a picture, please help me out by making a comment. Things that would be helpful are if the ID is incorrect, where and when the picture was taken and/or a short story of what you remember about the event in the picture. I'll use that information to better label the pictures.
WHERE I GET MY HISTORIC PHOTOS
Most of my photos come from the late Doris Browder, who had quite an extensive collection of Asher photographs. As you can tell, most of mine are scans of copies as I did not have access to very many originals. I do what I can to make them the best quality possible, but sometimes there's just not much to work with.
A lot of my pictures also come from family members and others who were kind enough to lend me photos to scan.
Lastly, a few I collected from the Internet. In most cases I have gained permission to use them. There are a select few in which I was unable to contact the "owner" but I have posted them anyway if I believe them to be in the public domain. If you believe a photo posted violates your copyright, please let me know and I will remove it, as required.
I'm always looking for new pictures (and also better quality pictures of ones I already have). Please contact me if you have anything you think might be of interest.
WHY I DO THIS
Everyone needs a hobby... this is mine.
I've always been interested in history and lately local history has really taken a hold of me. My ancestors have lived around Asher before there was an Asher, so it's interesting to me to see how the town was for them. The "Butts" side of my family was some of the first to settle in what would become Asher.
I post them online first as an easy way to share and preserve Asher's history. By having the photos out there, I also hope to get some feedback from visitors who might be able to tell me something about the photo I didn't know. So, anytime you have something to add to a photo, please leave a comment or just email me.
You may have noticed I've changed the screen name to "Small Town OK" as I expand my photos outside Asher a bit. I've now included some photos of other "small" towns including Ada, Shawnee, Wanette and Sacred Heart. My primary focus will remain on Asher photos, however.
CHECK MY BLOG FOR UPDATES
Be sure to visit my blog occasionally where I will post news about any new photos and updates.
BEWARE THE "TAKEN IN" DATA!
The dates indicated by "taken in" on photos is sometimes wrong, mostly on older pictures. If the date shown looks too recent, it's probably the date I scanned it, so just disregard. I am trying to go back and correct pictures, but it's not going too fast.
BE A LITTLE AFRAID OF THE CAPTIONS, TOO.
Being accurate of the description of older photos-- some over a hundred years old-- is never for certain. A lot of my information I get from existing notes on back of photos or on scraps of paper attached to photos. I verify what I can, but I really have no way to be sure. Sometimes I will be fairly certain about something, only to have to go back and change it later.
So, just keep all that in mind when you go through the pictures. I will keep Flickr updated as I find out more. If you have information that contradicts mine, be sure to share it.
IF YOU SEE "c." SOMEONE'S GUESSING!
If you ever see c., ca., circa, abt or about (how about some consistency here!) right before a date, it means me (or someone before me) is making an educated guess as to the date. Usually it will be pretty close, but don't take it to the bank or anything.
USING PHOTOS
You may use any photo published here without further permission, given you:
-Do not sell the photograph.
-Give credit of the photograph to "www.asherok.info"
-Do not use any photo with credit given to a third-person without gaining permission directly from that person.
Of course if the photo is in the public domain, you can basically do what you want. I haven't quite figured that all out, but I think these qualify:
*Works published before 1923 are in the public domain
*Works published between 1923-1963 are in the public domain (if copyright was not renewed)
*Works published after 1963 are probably NOT in the public domain.
I could be wrong on that. That whole "this is not legal advice" disclaimer applies here.
ADDING YOUR PHOTOS
I'd love to have any "Small Town Oklahoma" photos you have! You can contact me and we'll work something out, or you can join the Asher group and add your photos immediately. If you have any questions about that, just let me know!
