Juno, Venus, and Fortune

PAST EXHIBITION
This mythological scene does not seem to reference a specific source. At the center is Juno, accompanied by putti and her peacock and seated on a cloud. Below her, to the left, are Venus, with two white doves, and Fortune, on her wheel. This is the only fresco to clearly refer to the wedding of Filippo Archinto and Giulia Borromeo. The winged figure at bottom right representing a wind, most likely Zephyr, crowns with a laurel wreath the coats of arms of the two families: Archinto on the left and Borromeo on the right. The fresco was probably painted for one of the rooms that were to be inhabited by the couple, most likely the countess’s apartment, possibly her antechamber. Unfortunately, no preparatory drawings or paintings by Tiepolo linked to this fresco have been identified, though there must have been a modello for it, similar to those in Lisbon, New York, and Los Angeles.
