WELLINGTON Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert has hailed the impact of Jon McKain on his side and cannot think of a better centre half in the A-League.
McKain, who will be Phoenix vice-captain this season, was recruited to help bolster a defence that leaked goals all too easily last season.
Herbert is delighted with the way the former Olyroo has settled in at Westpac Stadium after his switch from Europe.
Phoenix have conceded just three goals in four pre-season games with McKain captaining the side in the Pre-Season Cup final against Melbourne Victory.
Herbert told the Dominion Post: "I'd struggle to find a better centre half in the league really.
"I think Jon has settled in really well, and obviously picking up the leadership role as well."
The only question mark is whether Shane Smeltz has enough support at the other end of the pitch.
Herbert feels he has enough firepower though and is confident chances will be converted.
"No, I don't have a problem. We're creating chances, we've got a lot of variety, so I think we've definitely shown enough," he said.
