This book was recommended reading for one of my literature classes.

The story of Heinrich Heine's life is interesting, especially since it was so very much effected by the politics of his time. This biography is well written and includes a lot of Heine's own poems and other texts in excerpts. It's easy to tell that the author is very passionate about Heinrich Heine and it is indeed fascinating to see how the perception of Heine's work and of him as a person has changed over time up until today.

I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in European/Jewish/German literature and/or history. It's an enjoyable read with a varied story that is not without tragedy and it gives an interesting inside into the cultural scenes of Berlin and Paris in the first half of the 19th century.

An exhaustive biography of Heine, which places the humanity of the poet at its center. For a layperson like me, it was a bit too detailed. However, for a student, it certainly is a treasure trove. Overall, a highly enriching read.

Een moooie biografie van een interessante schrijver/dichter. Heine was ook een (satirische) politiek commentator van zijn tijd en dan vooral van de toestanden in Duitsland. Om deze reden moest hij ook in Parijs gaan wonen. De censuur in Duitsland was erg streng. Hij is relatief jong overleden aan de gevolgen van een in zijn jeugd opgelopen syphilis. Hij bleef helder van geest, maar raakte uiteindelijk bijna volledig verlamd en blind.(een forse handicap, als je schrijver bent). Naast het leven van heine wordt in het boek ook veel verteld over de politieke toestanden in het post-Napoleontische tijdperk in Europa en vooral in Frankrijk en Duitsland.
