The political back drop and over all presentation made this an interesting read. Ibrahim was jailed for being a communist by Nasser, although Nasser aligned himself with the Russians.
Ibrahim read Hemmingway while in prison, becoming enamored with his style, and in "The Smell" employs Hemmingway's minimalism with a stream of conscious writing style. The nuances in the story aligned with the politics makes it interesting.

The translators introduction is excellent and gives the reader great insight into Egyptian culture and the politics of the time.
While Ibrahim is not in the same league as Mahfouz, as far as a being a writer, but the historical importance of the book pays off for the reader.....a generous 4 stars
