Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane have signed on to star in the horror pic Somnia, the next film from Oculus director Mike Flanagan.
Sierra/Affinity has come aboard to handle international sales on Somnia, in addition to taking over duties on Oculus, which was previously being handled by Focus Features International (Universal announced Wednesday that FFI will close at the end of the year).
Co-written by Flanagan and Jeff Howard, Somnia — set to start shooting next weekend — is about an orphaned child (Jacob Tremblay) whose dreams and nightmares manifest physically as he sleeps. Bosworth and Jane will play the child’s parents.
Demarest Films and MICA Entertainment are financing the movie, with Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy and Demarest’s Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson producing. Mali Elfman and D. Scott Lumpkin are executive producers.
“Somnia is a natural follow-up to Oculus for Mike. We are thrilled that Kate and Thomas have joined us for Somnia, and look forward to Sierra presenting both titles at the AFM,” said Macy.
Englebardt added, “Mike Flanagan blew us away with Oculus and we’re thrilled to be working with him and Trevor on Somnia.”
Oculus, premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in September, was quickly acquired in the U.S. by Relativity Media. The film revolves around a horrifying family incident that left two young children orphans a decade earlier. Authorities charged the brother with murder, but the sister believes the true culprit is a haunted antique mirror, and is determined to prove her theory even though the brother has been rehabilitated and is ready to move on.
Bosworth is represented by CAA, Radius Entertainment and Sloane Offer. Jane is represented by Paradigm and Ziffren Brittenham. Flanagan and Howard are represented by APA, Affirmative Entertainment and Nelson Davis Wetzstein.
