The comedic actor talks about his new Saturday Night Live inspired show, 30 Rock.

Tracy Morgan is known best for a number of recurring characters on Saturday Night Live, including Brian Fellows and Astronaut Jones. When Tina Fey left SNL to create her own show, 30 Rock, she created a role for former castmate Morgan. That character, Tracy Jordan, is a riff on a number of famous comedians and the pilot includes a tip of the hat to one of Martin Lawrence's notorious claims to fame.
The show has recently undergone some retooling as Fey and producer Lorne Michaels made some adjustments to the cast, which includes Fey herself, Alec Baldwin, Rachel Dratch and the new addition of Jane Krakowski. What hasn't changed is Morgan's performance as the somewhat daft and highly unpredictable Jordan. We sat down with Morgan at the recent Television Critics Association event in Pasadena, California and talked with him about his character and what's in store for the future.
IGN TV: So are you done with Saturday Night Live?

Tracey Morgan: I'm never done with SNL, you know. I'm family there. Nobody's ever 'done with it.'

IGN TV: How did you get involved with 30 Rock?

Morgan: Tina asked me to do it. It's right up my alley and it was tailor made for me.

IGN TV: Now you've said that this character is not supposed to be Martin Lawrence, but there are definite similarities.

Morgan: Look, Martin is my friend. We're not out there to burn Martin. This character was done in great spirits. It's the spirit of the thing that matters, and he knows that. I love him and I know when he sees it he's going to crack up. He's one of the funniest people in our generation and he's going to laugh.

IGN TV: NBC has talked about doing some sketches of the "The Girlie Show" [30 Rock's fictional sketch show] online. If so, are you going to be a part of those?

Morgan: You know what, I don't know anything about that. That's a question for Lorne Michaels.

IGN TV: Besides Martin where are you drawing from for this character?

Morgan: Well, I know all kinds of people in this world and I'll use all of them. But I'm only bringing the energy, this is Tina's head here. She created the role and they're her words.

IGN TV: Are there any plans for you to host SNL?

Morgan: Oh man, I don't know. You gonna have to ask Lorne Michaels that.

IGN TV: But it would appear to be in your future, with this new show, produced by Lorne, and your being a former cast member.

Morgan: Hey, come on! You're going to jinx it! If you're asking me do I hope to host the show? Sure. I hope to. But I have no idea if it will happen.

IGN TV: What else is in store for you this year?

Morgan: Well, there's 13 episodes of 30 Rock and beyond that I can't tell you. I'll do some more stand-up. But I can't tell you what's ahead. I can't call it because I might spoil it. That's not the way my mind pops. I take it one day at a time.

IGN TV: Do you usually perform in Los Angeles?

Morgan: Nah, I like to go out on the road to the Funnybones and Improvs out there. I just did the House of Blues in Vegas.

IGN TV: What games do you play?

Morgan: If I gamble, I'll play roulette. My wife and I will play roulette and that's about it. I'm not a heavy gambler. Hell, I don't even know how to play roulette.

IGN TV: How can you not know how to play? What do you do then?

Morgan: I just sort of play red or black, I'll bet odds and evens, you know. Depends on how I'm feeling it.

IGN TV: I think what you just described is knowing how to play. I'm not sure there's too much more to it. Do you have a regular Vegas gig?

Morgan: No, no way. I'm touring. I just had Little Man open up. I'm enjoying that stuff.

IGN TV: Since working with the Wayans, has the idea of doing a spot on Damon Wayans' show The Underground come up?

Morgan: No. I mean, if he asked me I'd do something, but I've got 30 Rock. That's enough. I don't want to burn out or get overexposed. I want to do 30 Rock and come home to my family. I'm not going to do anything else but raise my kids.

IGN TV: How old are your kids?

Morgan: 21, 19 and 15.

IGN TV: And you're...

Morgan: 37. Do the math. I had my first son when I was 17. In the ghetto we have sex early. We use sex as a sedative. It helps ease the pain of poverty. "You're broke. I'm broke. Let's make a family." I'm glad things worked out though.

IGN TV: But things change, right? I imagine it's been a while since you were broke.

Morgan: It has? What time is it? The only person who knows what's in my wallet is my wife. But hey - I've been on TV for 12 years I should have something, right? Been on Saturday Night Live for 7 years, then I should have something. If I don't then I'm a dumb motherf***er!
