Sundance '97 Lineups Set

indieWIRE has learned that Mark Herman’s “Brassed Off“
starring Pete Postlethwaite, Ewan McGregor and Tara Fitzgerald will open the
’97 festival at a Gala Premiere in Salt Lake City on January 16th, while
Director Richard Linklater and writer Eric Bogosian’s “Suburbia” will kick off
the festival in Park City the following night. Officials at the Sundance
Institute confirmed that lineups for the 1997 Sundance Film Festival will be
announced later today. In a break with tradition, this year the press office
will distribute the entire lineup, rather than break up the announcement over
the course of a few weeks. Other announcements expected today include the
list of all competition films as well as details on The American Spectrum,
festival premieres, World Cinema screenings and midnight films.

Festival programmers began notifying filmmakers of their acceptance into the
festival last week. Films set to be announced in the Dramatic Competition
are: DeMane Davis, Harry McCoy and Khari Streetcar’s “Black & White & Red All
Over“; Vin Diesel’s “Strays“; Bart Freundlich’s “The Myth Of Fingerprints“; Robert
Hella’s “Colin Fitz“; Neil LaBute’s “In The Company Of Men“; Eric Lea’s “George
B.“; Tim Blake Nelson’s “Eye Of God“; Jonathan Nossiter’s “Sunday“; Mark
Pellington’s “Going All The Way“; Kristine Peterson’s “Slaves To The
Underground“; Ira Sach’s “The Delta“; Andrew Shea’s “Santa Fe“; Alex Sichel’s “Al
Over Me“; Jill Sprechter’s “Clockwatchers“; Mark Waters’ “House Of Yes“; Hannah
Weyer’s “Arresting Gena“; and Theodore Whitcher’s “Love Jones“.

In the festival’s Documentary Competition, films set to screen are: Macky
Alston’s “Family Name“; St. Clair Bourne’s “John Henrik Clarke: A Great And
Mighty Walk“; Monte Bramer’s “Paul Monette: The Brink Of Summer’s End“; Kirby
Dick’s “Sick: The Life And Death Of Bob Flanagan Super Masochist“; Arthur
Dong’s “Licensed To Kill“; Su Friedrich’s “Hide And Seek“; Mark J. Harris’ “The
Long Way Home“; Judith Helfand’s “A Healthy Baby Girl“; Lexy Lovell and Michael

A number of premieres are on tap for the 1997 festival, among them: David
Lynch’s “Lost Highway“; Tom DiCillo’s “Box Of Moonlight“; Kevin Smith’s “Chasing
Amy“; Victor Nunez’ “Ulee’s Gold“; Gregg Araki’s “Nowhere“; Robert Downey Sr’s
“Hugo Pool“; Errol Morris’ “Fast, Cheap & Out Of Control“; Joe Mantello’s “Love!
Valor! Compassion!“; and Vondie Curtis Hall’s “Gridlock’d“.

In the American Spectrum section, twenty-two films are set, they are: Miguel
Arteta’s “Star Maps“; Matthew Carnahan’s “Black Circles Boys“; Robert Celestino’s “Mr. Vincent“; Jay Chandrasekhar’s “Puddle Cruiser“; Julie Davis’ “I Love

Festival organizers are expected to announce over 120 films that will screen
during the ten-day event. There will also be a number of short films and
special presentations.
