After the 2022 Formula 2 season, Williams and Logan Sargeant confirmed their partnership for this year’s Formula One grid.
Sargeant had a great rookie season in Formula 2 with Carlin Racing where he finished fourth overall in the drivers’ championship standings.
Former Team Principal of Williams, Jost Capito, confirmed Sargeant’s seat with them at the US Grand Prix in October, one month before the Formula 2 finale in Abu Dhabi.
However, his seat was not secured until the last race of the 2022 F2 season where Sargeant would finish high enough in the standings to guarantee him his super license needed to race in F1.
Throughout his junior racing career, Sargeant has proved that he has more than enough talent to succeed in Formula 1. In the 2020 Formula 3 season, Sargeant competed against fellow F1 graduate, Oscar Piastri for the title.
The two only had a few points separating them ahead of the final round in Mugello where an unfortunate incident on the opening lap saw Sargeant retire, dropping down the third in the overall standings. He missed out to Théo Pourchaire who was promoted to Formula 2 with ART.
In 2021, Sargeant remained in F3 but admitted that he thought his ‘F1 dream was dead’.
Although he only finished fifth this season with Charouz, he demonstrated perseverance as well as a great talent in helping the team to develop a car.
His announcement to join Charouz was a last minute decision after struggling for sponsorship money, but it proved to be one of the most defining seasons of his career.
Charouz had previously been back markers in Formula 3, but with Sargeant’s help they improved to fifth in the constructors’ standings and their best result since the series was rebranded.
One year later he joined Carlin in Formula 2. He had an impressive rookie season where he took the chequered flag in two Feature Races after finishing in the points fairly consistently. He had some bad luck after the summer break but still managed to get the points he needed.
Capito spoke very highly of the young American before his retirement and was confident of the success that he can bring to the team. The Formula One season starts on the 2nd of March and Sargeant will be teammates with Alex Albon.
Sargeant spoke with confidence ahead of the season at Williams car launch earlier this week. He described how the junior categories have shaped him to be ready for F1 and the sacrifices he has made since moving away from America.
