Volunteer - Irish Traction Group

  • ️Mon Jan 27 2025

We are always looking for volunteers to help restore and maintain our collection of preserved Irish diesel locomotives.

Our restoration base is at the Goods Store, Carrick-On-Suir Railway Station, Carrick-On-Suir, Co. Tipperary, where work is currently ongoing on C226 to return it to operational status.

Maintenance of the running fleet takes place at the Downpatrick & County Down Railway (DCDR), Downpatrick, Co. Down, where A39R, 146, C231, G611 and G617 are located.

Some other locos are currently stored at the West Clare Railway, Moyasta, Co. Clare.

If you’re interested in Irish diesel traction and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, or have any specialist experience that may prove useful to the Group, e.g. welding, painting, or mechanical and electrical engineering skills, we would be delighted to hear from you. Even if you have no previous experience, there are still plenty of jobs you can help with, as well as the opportunity to learn from our more experienced volunteers.

The only essentials, are some work clothes and a pair of safety shoes/boots and for anyone coming to DCDR, a hi viz vest.

As the DCDR is a working heritage railway, as well as helping keep our locos maintained, ITG volunteers there also have the chance to train for a number of operational positions. You can live the dream of driving some classic Irish diesel locomotives if you are willing to go through the required training that will eventually lead to diesel driver.

If you are interested in volunteering with the ITG, please contact us.
